Hi , a simple question i hope but i cant find an answer written anywhere. My son is going into 2nd year and qualified for a grant last year .The vec say there is no need to apply again as he will automatically qualify and it will be paid to the college and his bank etc.Is this correct ?

Yep, that's the case. I think there's a simple form they might send out but that would be about it. You don't have to go through all the pain again!

I THINK that answers my question also..

    Im confused though..
As far as I was aware I was set, for the rest of my degree having qualified for the grant in first year. That was worked out on my dads earnings from 2006, I think...

The vec have sent a form, that has to be signed by the college to state im continuing, but they have also requested p60's etc from last year. Im worried, because his earnings went up last year, and if its recalculated, I get nothing but my fees. Did you get this?

I really hope it's not recalculated.

Nope, what matters is your income for 2007 if you're getting the grant for 2008/9 academic year. I don't know if what they sent out is related just to your Council or not though.

One of my friends got a grant for 1st and 2nd year but didn't get it in 3rd or 4th year since they had exceeded the income limit for 3rd or 4th year. Officially if you're getting a grant and you wouldn't be entitled to it that's fraud.

The grant comes from meath vec. Yeah thats true I suppoes. Its very annoying, because even though the earnings were up for last year, our situation is worse, he's been out of work for medical reasons since feb, so money isn't exactly flowing.
    Thanks anyway.

    Dsane1, I hope you's don't have the same problem

Well in that case you should be able to keep the grant due to a 'change in circumstances'. Basically if there's not much income now even though last year there was enough you should be eligible for the grant. If you go over due to last year's income, contact the VEC about the 'change in circumstances' your family is experiencing. You should be OK then (assuming you're under the income threshold now).

    Horribly complicated I know!
