Whats broken in my pc?

    Hey there

As some of you may have noticed I posted a topic about bent pins on a cpu, I have recently aligned them and got them to fit into the socket again.

Now the the thing is the pc wasn't starting up before the bent pins issues anyways.

What I am getting when I boot up the pc is, the power comes on fans spin up on cpu case and gfx car, I hear the HD drive spin up also. Now the thing is I'm not getting any video signal from the pc, nor am I hearing any more HD movement from after the initial spin up.

I've tried different video cards, and thats not it, ive moved my ram from it, and tried it in another computer, and it works, so its no that.

So Im left with my CPU, or Motherboard, thing is I cant check if its the CPU cus I dont have a matching socket on my other PCs.

Is there any way to tell straight up if its the motherboard?

    Many thanks,
    Coz.

There are usually diagnostic leds on the motherboard, or if you have a onboard speaker or one hooked up it should let you know with a beep code. Have you followed the following?

    1. Is your psu powerfull enough?
    2. Is everything plugged in properly? Un plug and replug.
    3. Cmos reset. You can do this by shorting a jumper, or by removing the small 1€ sized battery for a few mins.

Where are you based? Maybe someone here lives close and could offer the use of their motherboard/cpu !

Have you tried booting from a CD - doesnt have to be a Windows OS CD - any bootable CD like memtest , any linux distro , etc .
Have come across this a few times where the System drive was borked and/or a device on the IDE ribbon had failed . To this day I dont understand why the machines I refer to wouldnt POST or show any display but if your PC will boot from CD and display POST on your monitor there's a fair chance it's the same issue . If that turns out to be the case I'd then disconnect all devices other than the HD , ensuring jumpers and cable positions are Master .
If you're using SATA drives then I'm talking out of my hat :) . I'd still try the bootable CD idea though ..

Hmmm, well the thing is the PSU is the same one that has been powering it since the beginning, unless they can get old and output less power? Maybe this is the case?

Em, might try that battery trick you talk of.

Shorting a jumper doesn't sound to nice :/
Can i reset the cmos by movig a jumper lpug somewhere else or something, guess ill try find the motherboard manual for all that stuff.

I was looking for those led lights on the motherboard, I cant seem to find any of them, there are also no beeps coming from the thing.

As regards to the booting and all that, yes im afraid im using a Sata hard drive :/

Thanks again for help! Keep it coming :D

Shorting the jumper just means moving the plastic cap to a different posisition. Although you can do it with a screwdriver nut its not reccomended ;)

As in this pic you can see clearly how to reset the cmos :

Remove the SATA HD & CD Drive to see if you can get something up on screen. Basically you want to take as much out of the loop as you can, just Mobo, CPU, Ram & GFX card.

Only use 1 stick of memory, don't connect anything to it Via USB, remove cables & power going to the HD/CD (it means the PC requires less power to boot).

Come back and let us know how you get on, can come up with more things to try.

Also the CMOS reset is a good idea.

    Hey again,

Ok tried all of the above, nothing coming up on screen still.

Think i reset the CMOS anyways, removed battery, and also changed jumper settings on the MB, that said CMOS reset beside it, though I'm not sure for certain what I did was the right thing to do to reset it, just guessed.

So dunno what to do now,

CPU Fan spins up and the fan on the graphics card spins up, and when the sata drive is connected I can hear that spin up, and thats about it from the machine.

    ??
    :)

    Coz.

You shouldnt hear the SATA drive spin up if its not connected to the motherboard or the power ;) . Incase this is part of the problem (due to power reasons or otherwise) remove it from the link. You have enough to see text on the screen. [if you have tried without it connected then ignore]

Can you try the Graphics card in another machine? Is there another monitor you can try?
    * After trying this i would be thinking its the motherboard.

Just thinking, does yoru graphics require any extra power, in the form of a cable plugged into it ?

Are the leds on your keyboard flashing when you power up?

Have you tried to do any of these?. At least if you can run the Memtest from the bootable you then know if the Gfx card is working, it is strange that your not getting any POST

IF you can hear any beeps, this might help:
