Moviextras.ie are currently advertising on job sites, recruiting extras. Could be a bit of craic. I know there is a lot of standing around, paparazzi (!) etc but I could do with the pocket money.

There is a €99 sign up fee and i am just wondering is it a bit of a scam or are there genuine opportunities?

Never pay somebody to work. Its a golden rule.

I know of the women that set this company up and it is a genuine thing but after paying the money you are not guaranteed any work so it's kind of up to chance really whether you fit the bill of whatever is being filmed and there doesn't seem to be many productions in Ireland at the moment. Not a scam though.

Just a waste of money. You can get roles as an extra if you just go looking yourself.

I supplied moving props (vintage motorbikes) to Ardmore Studios in the mid 90ies, it can be very boaring, You get lads full of themselves running around the place ordering you about thinking they are important just because they carry walkie talkies. we spent two days on Wicklow beach trying to perfect a 15 minute clip. Money isnt all that good as people make it out to be. If you get your foot anyway in the door you are expected to join the Union "Equithy". i.e More money

I've been a member for a couple of years and have found them great. The people running it are very friendly and they don't mislead you regarding your chances (in auditions etc).

Is it E99 these days? I paid much less and, if I'm not a millionaire these days, I've made my money back a good few times.

Like most things in life, you've to make some effort if you want to succeed at it - show up to multiple auditions, do a bit of free work to keep people sweet, maximise your physical appearance.

Through doing it, I've been an extra in a scene with Brendan Gleeson, been on Fair City, met Jack Charlton, and appeared on Podge and Rodge. Not life-changing stuff, but I had a laugh and more than covered my costs.

Not as such. They have a professional photographer that does shoots in the Westbury every couple of months. They email you telling you about it but you're in no way obliged to go. It's more for people who are dead serious about getting work, jobbing actors and that.

I work in a different sector altogether so I wasn't forking out for a photographer. I just uploaded some holiday pics (decent ones though) and waited for the offers to roll in. Movieextras sent me a few emails telling me there was too much clutter (etc) in my photos and that casting agents wouldn't be able to see my profile unless I put up clearer pics. But I never changed the photos and the offers kept trickling in.

I was lazy though; they know they're business. Maybe I would've got more work if I'd done what they said!

    Seriously, though, they're good guys!

    Look at their website www.movieextras.ie

No interview, though some auditions. A lot of it is appearance-based, but roles call for all kinds of physiques / faces, so whatever you've got might be worth something.

Anyway, I'm off to bed. Gotz 2 getz my beauty sleep ;)
