Read the FAQ and PM'd spockety about this, but its been a while since he was in DCU so he unfortunately is unable to give me a modern answer to this:

    Overnight Guests

Long story short, security on campus is tight. This means that you are not allowed guests in your apartment after 12pm so forget about bringing people home after a night out. The only way around this is to go through a rather complicated procedure of gaining permission the day before hand however you must provide the name of the person you wish to stay, hence forget about randomers. It also costs something like €5. In short, its complete bull****.

What's the deal with this nowadays? Can you just still fill out the form the day beforehand and its all good? Why do you have to pay a €5, to have someone in the room you're renting? What's the whole process now? Is it as tight?

Cheers, just curious as I may consider going to DCU next year!

Been living in postgrad apartments this year and never bothered paying for that crap. But we're out of the way here so don't think they really care about policing it. If you were in the main hub of accommodation I'd say you'd be better off paying the 5 euro. **** I hate DCU. Money grabbing bastards

I think living on res is only really ideal for 1st years moving to Dublin for the first time, after that the benefits of taking care of yourself in your own place for less money start to become apparent

As far as I am aware, the above is still the case Beau x1. The €5 levied is an "Administration" charge, clearly to pay for the trouble of handing you a form, looking at it and then letting security know...go figure.

As spockety's summary and indeed the Accommodation FAQ states, this system pretty much rules out randomers and is usually reserved for people having friends visiting and what not. Post grad's can usually get away with this as the entrance to their accommodation is not monitored by security but if you're a prospective first year, as your post hints, then you'll be in Larkfield or Hampstead which is monitored.

The alternative to on-campus res is, of course, Shanowen Halls and Square which is just across the road and equally handy to live in while attending college.

Cheers lads, clears up a lot for me.

@Igy: I thought 4 grand or so for the year seemed pretty fair! Where would I find my own place to rent for that sort of money?!

dont be smart, you know what he means.

accommodation outside of res is usually cheaper, but thats not including bills etc

theres pros and cons of each really, depends what you want out of your first year away from home

They definately do enforce it, you fill the form out online and submit it before noon on that day. Then, by 4 o clock they'll let you know whether you're allowed bring the guest in. The €5 is taken from your deposit. Make sure your guest has ID too.

oh yeah i did actually misinterpret what he meant, i thought he was saying that you dont look after yourself on campus, i was drunk when posting. yeah bills can be very expensive when you have inconsiderate housemates especially. i think security is the biggest difference between accomodations as they are extremely strict, that and room inspections. larkfield is a joke though

They do enforce it but if your guest is there before 11 theydont check you at the entrance and as long as you dont go out and try to come back in your grand, they dont check you on the way out so if yr friends come over at 10 and drink with you till 3 no bother or stay the night. jumping over the gates at the back is pretty easy and 90% of the time youll get away with it as long as there isnt a dcu night out on

Eventually, you'll find out who the sound security guards are, who might turn a blind eye to you bringing someone in who's not signed in.
