A coworker asked me about a problem on his pc: virus that keeps appearing even after completely reinsltalling Windows XP. I've no more information and am no computer expert, but though maybe a complete deletion of the hard disk with some freeware rewrite software might help.

    Is that helpful?

what freeware detetion software is there available?

what software would be good to avoid more viruses? he has four kids that use the pc and get in trouble.
I use and thought of recomending AVG+Windows Defender+Firefox with Scriptblock+some firewall. Suggestions?

    J

I assume when he re-installed windows he installed it over the old one which wouldn't do a thing in this case.

Tell him to re-install windows but make sure he formats the drive(is an option during the isntallation process) as this will wipe everything on it. Shouldn't need anything more than that.
