    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/142223

    Acer Altos G330 Mk2 Dual-Core Xeon E3110 / 3GHz / 1GB / DVD / Gigabit Ethernet

Note does not include a hard drive.

In the box you get the server itself, with:

    1x 1Gb DDR2 800MHz memory,

    1x SATA DVD-ROM drive,

    1x two-button wheel mouse (ball!?),

    3x spare SATA leads,

1x two pin (EU!?) power lead,

    1x system builder DVD,

    1x 3M anti-static bracelet.

The back panel includes VGA-out, ethernet, 2xUSB, and PS/2 keyboard and mouse sockets.

    You do NOT get:

    - Hard drives,

    - Writer/rewriter,

    - Sound card,

    - Graphics card,

    - Wireless,

    - Keyboard.

Smart buying on ebuyer will mean you can add the above parts at very low cost. This is worth it, because the processor from this server when bought separately is practically the same price.

    Additional info:

    - Supports dual-channel memory, so buy paired sticks.

    - Does NOT have IDE channels, only SATA, so plan for this if adding a DVD rewriter.

looks like a decent cpu for a budget server

Sure i got all that, with two 80gb hard drives for less than that from Dell before Christmas.

Not with a Xeon 3GHz Dual Processor you didn't ;)

(Dell PowerEdge 440SC had 1.8GHz Xeon or Pentium D)

Thats true yes, I got the Xeon 1.8. I suppose the cost of some hard drive versus the cost of upgrading the CPU.... Not a bad deal if you want a server.

Would this be any good as an upgrade to a PC. Would this processor be any good for client versions of Vista and XP?

How do you mean any good? it will be fine to put on XP and do some internet browsing but without knowing anything about the motherboard its unlikely it will make a good games machine.

you can always compare it to the one here,

http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055338213 . similar spec, though the xeon procs in the acer would be faster.

That hp one does have a pci-express x16 slot so you can add one of the current say nvidia series 8/9 cards.
So I suppose compare both and see when you add all the extra bits which would be worth it.
Though just to throw a spanner in the works, if you compare both these to a case/psu/mobo/cpu/memory/harddrive/gfx card from komplett, do ya really save that much ?

According to a few different sites the Xeon in this is equivalent to the Core 2 Duo E8400

    http://www.circuitremix.com/index.php?q=node/122

Tried to order this yesterday, but only except UK credit cards

Has anybody bought of ebuyer using paypal or managed to find an option to enter a delivery address to Ireland? They do quote delivery charges to Eire but can't see how to select it

the site does say there a £25 surcharge for delivery to ireland

dya think it would be any use for a TB NAS..needing everything in one place, just looking into server opions now...need it at around 3tb though

140 quid for that? The CPU alone (E3110) costs 128 quid from the same supplier!!

I think its over kill for a NAS. I think you want to be looking for
something very low power. I'm waiting for one of these to come
out with gigabit Ethernet. Much more expensive though. :)

So does the Acer according to extended specs:

    1 ( 0 ) x processor ¦ 4 memory - DIMM 240-pin ¦ 1 ( 1 ) x PCI Express x16 ( x8 mode ) ¦ 1 ( 1 ) x PCI Express x8 ( x4 mode ) ¦ 1 ( 1 ) x PCI Express x4 ( x1 mode ) ¦ 2 ( 2 ) x PCI

Not sure what they mean by "(x8 mode)" in this instance - usually to do with SLI configuration speeds but also mentions "(x4 mode)" so it's a bit confusing.

I was going to buy this for my main PC until I saw that.

AFAIK it basically means although you can physically install a 16x PCIe graphics card, it will only run at 8x PCIe speed, basically, half as fast as it should.

Also be aware that you need to purchase Acer's propriatory hard-drive caddies if you want to add extra HD's, and I believe these are impossible to purchase without purchasing a HD as well.
