Hi, This was discussed by BBC at the weekend but we are having a disagreement about what they said. Rule 18-2 states that if the ball moves after you have addressed the ball then you incur a one stroke penalty. My question is what happens if you address the ball, then walk away and 30 seconds later the ball moves? My mates think that this a one stroke penalty as well even though the ball moved while he was not in the address position. Strange one I know but interesting.

I'd agree with your mate, although I'm not 100% sure. The definition of "address" changes, however, depending on where your ball is.

    unless you re-mark the ball

I just checked it up in "Decisions on the Rules of Golf" and if you walk away you are not penalised if the ball moves.

It's kind of similar to when Tiger was on the 18th tee in the Masters and backed out of his swing when something distracted him. You are only penalised if you are addressing the ball and if your club is touching the ground. Hope that answers your question...

    18-2b/7
Ball Moves After Player Addresses It and Then Steps Away

    Q.
A player takes his stance and grounds his club. Realising that the ball is precariously balanced and may move, he steps away from the ball and starts again. This time he does not ground his club, but before he strikes the ball, it moves. What is the ruling?

    A.
The player incurs a penalty under Rule 18-2b, and the ball must be replaced.

    Hi Copacetic,

I would like to apologise to anyone I have mislead but my last post was incorrect. My dad has since told me that I referenced the wrong decision. I originally referenced decision number 18-2b/8, but having just discussed it with my dad, we have come to the conclusion that I was wrong and the decision number is in fact 18-2b/7. This decision states that a 1 stroke penalty is actually incurred.

Once again, apologies for misleading you guys!

why did harrington hover his putter off the ground when putting? would he have incurred a penalty if the ball moved while his putter was off the ground. He never actually grounded the club during the stroke...

If you take your normal stance to putt the ball and your club is grounded (you are ready to take the stroke, you have addressed the ball), it's a penalty if the ball moves (and you replace the ball).

If you have taken your stance but are hovering the club, you haven't addressed the ball so if it moves from wind, it's not a penalty and you play it from wherever it moved to.

The uncertain thing for me in this is that if he was hovering the club all day, then could this not be interpreted as his (usual) address position?

You have to address the ball including grounding the club before a penalty would be incurred

as above if you have addressed the ball and grounded the club but then re-mark the ball you can re-start the procedure without fear of penalty if ball moves

no worries, was worried there for a sec. Rule is as licksy posted. However as noted on bbc half the players including Norman didn't seem to know the rule anyway!
