I'm off to Sicily in September.
We will be renting a car and staying in Positano for the first week.
After that, we are thinking of driving down to Villa San Giovanni where I believe you can get a car ferry across to Messina.
    At least, that's the plan.
My question is, has anyone done this and how did it go?
Can you just turn up and buy your ticket for the car ferry then or do you have to book in advance?
    Thanks.

It's a pretty easy crossing IMO.

Just follow the signs to the Traghetta (ferry terminal) where you can get a ticket at the office; no need to book in advance). It's about €25 per car

Drive up to the ferry, hand over your ticket and bingo, you're all parked on the boat :)

edit: Just checked on Tripadvisor who said that the ferry leaves every 20 minutes and it takes 20 minutes to cross. No need to book in advance.

Have a look at Tropea if you get to the mainland.

Sicily is wonderful - you'll definitely enjoy. Don't waste time in Messina though - I didn't find much of interest.

We've rented a house with pool half way between Trapani and Palermo, so we'll just be driving straight down there.

On the way back, we'll be staying a night in Parghelia which is very near Tropea. What's special about the place?
