Movie question

Have a few movies on my computer (it's all legit) but some are in this format (see below) which adds up to just over 7GB.

    wwwwhd5.jpg

Whereas I have a few that are the format below, both are the same lenght (ish) but this one only takes up 558MB.

So my question is how to I make all the files in the first picture into one file like in the second picture while making the file smaller in size?

You can't. At least not directly. The .vob files are DVD media format, and this is the reason they are larger (higher quality).

You can simply convert the vob files and then pin them together. To convert them, all you need to do is right click the vob file and change the extension to .mpg

This won't change the size though. You'll have to pin them all together (Windows Movie Maker can do this I believe) and then refactor the compression rate if you want the final file to be smaller.

    Cheers. Anyone else have suggestions?

    The Warriors.....great film.

It's all about compression. The VOBs there are from a DVD as Mirror said. Stands for "Video Objects"
The MP4 file has much higher video & sound compression vs the DVDs vobs (Mpeg4 vs Mpeg2)

I could go into a long post here but we'll stay quick and dirty.

Try renaming each vob to say "1.mpg", "2.mpg", "3.mpg" and so on.

From a command prompt within the directory of the newly renamed vobs type:

    copy /b 1.mpg + 2.mpg + 3.mpg final.mpg

This will binary copy all the file into one file called, "Final.mpg"

You could then use any multitude of converters out there to transcode to mpeg4

If you really wanted to do a good job transcoding download DGAVCDec & AviSynth as a start and we can go from there.

I assume The Warriors dvd is your own?

Cheers I'll give it a try tomorrow, and come back with the verdict.

Yup it is just throwing all my movies onto my external hard-drive for easy watching.

If you already own to dvd, first copy it to you harddrive with DVDDecrypter.
Once you have the vobs "decrypted" (important) use Handbrake to convert. Just use the templates.

    Too easy. ;)

Sound enough of uploading them again. I shall begin in a bit.;) Thanks again.

Just a quick question are the only files I need DVD Movie or do I need the IFO back-ups etc...

Depends on the app your using to transcode.
IFOs stand for InFOrmation. IFO Files give the dvd player important navigational information, like where a chapter starts, where a certain audio or subtitle stream is located, etc. For Handbrake there, you would need them.

The bup files (BackUP) are just copies of the ifo files.

On the DVD Decrypter to I "Select All" or "Select VOB"?

I use AutoGK (Auto Gordian Knot). Great piece of software. Just rip the dvd with DVDShrink (down to 4.3gb) and use AGK to convert to AVI. If you use 8mb per minute you will have very good quality divx rip.

It's already decryptering as we speak. Although I'll try your way out tomorrow and see which one is smaller.;)

I used DVDShrink but it didn't but it into one file so I have a few, so now I can't use AutoGk to convert it?

You can. Just follow the steps below. For the input file select the VTS_01_0.IFO file for all .VOB files. You will know it's the right file when you see the length of the film (should be over an hour and a half at least). If it's not this length, then you have not seleted the main movie file and probably one of the dvds extras content. Hope it helps.

Step 1 : Input and Output Directories
    1. autogk_step1.gif
point.gifAutoGK Step 1 : Input and Output Directories

    2. Start AutoGK
    3. In this section, we specify the input and output to AutoGK. The input would be the DVD files or an AVI/MPG file, and the output would be the name of the converted file. For the DVD files, you will notice that there will most likely be more than one .VOB file (eg. VTS_01_0.VOB, VTS_01_1.VOB, VTS_01_2.VOB ...) - to convert all of these files at the same time, simply load the corresponding .IFO file for these .VOB files (for example, VTS_01_0.IFO for all .VOB files name VTS_01_*.VOB).
    4. Now use the folder icon to select your input and output files.
    5. Additional information about the input is displayed when you load the input DVD/file.
Step 2: Select Audio Track and Subtitle Track
    1. autogk_step2.gif
point.gifAutoGK Step 2 : Select Audio Track and Subtitle Track

    2. AutoGK should now know enough about your input files to display a list of audio tracks on the current DVD/file. Select the audio track that you want to use in your converted DivX/XviD movie. If you want more than one audio track for your converted movie, you can select the second track here as well.
    3. Do the same for the subtitle track, if the original DVD had subtitles.

Step 3 : Select Output Size
    1. autogk_step3.gif
      point.gifAutoGK Step 3 : Select Output Size

    2. We will now define the desired output size for the converted file. A "1 CD" movie will usually not look that great, whereas a "2 CD" movie will usually look pretty decent. You can also set a custom size, or define the file size as a quality value (percentage of original quality).
    Step 5 : Start Encoding
    1. Now all that's left is to start the actual encoding, which will take a while (depending on how fast your computer is). Start the encoding by pressing the "Add Job" button to add the current encoding job to the job queue (which means you can actually encode several different files/DVDs one after the other, without you having to intervene - great for when you want to leave the computer on overnight to convert several DVDs). There is also a "Shutdown when done" option, which shutsdown your computer once all the jobs have been completed.
      autogk_addjob.gif

      point.gifAutoGK : Add Job
    2. Once your job(s) has been added to the job queue, press the "Start Encoding" button pictured above, sit back and relax while AutoGK does all the hard work.

AutoGK's a savage piece of kit. I used it a while ago for transferring all of my DVD's to .avi format which I store on a juicy raid array now.

2 pass encoding takes a lot longer but results in (noticeably) much better quality for the same file size.
