The Dark Knight #1 on IMDB

Thats a joke. Its a really good film, but number 1 already. Its only opened 3 days in the US. It makes a mockery of democracy.

I blame stupid fanboys **** over the corpse of ledger, thinking that the top spot on imdb will some how immortalise his memory.

Yeah. Death doesnt magically make someone a great actor. And death doesnt suddenly make your last performance in a movie iconic.
A bit reactionary I say. But donw worry. I just wrote a review of Baseketball on there that will have the dark knight down to at least #2.
    Yuk yuk yuk yuk.

It shows that IMDB's system is a bit flawed - no movie should be able to take #1 after three days. Their weighting system should hopefully adjust itself.

The movie gets so high because of the sheer number of votes - something as
popular as this, with legions of fan boys, have far more voting power than classics that were released before they were born. It distorts voting a bit.

If you want further proof of fan idiocy, check the break down of the votings - 10 and 9 are the most popular marks, followed by 1. Yes so it's either amazing or crap with little in between. Then again a casual look at IMDB forums tells you all you need to know about a lot of their regular users...

It'll fix itself, after a week the negatives will kick in and sanity shall be found.

Yup. The fanboys won battle one. The reactionary negative bastards (ie ME) will win the war.

It's sorta like when "The Wind That Shakes the Barley" got released. A lot of people started giving it low marks even before it came out

I think in general the top 250 is quite a good list, but if I see a movie scoring really highly and it was released in the last 2 years, I get a bit suspicious. But give it a couple of years and it will be in a more realistic position.

It does make me look forward to it that bit more. :)

from what I heard on several other forums, it's all just Ledger fanboys voting 10 after 10 even though they haven't seen the movie. They're also giving the Godfather and stuff 1s to lower it's rating.

Godammit! Though it is odd seeing a movie of this decade in the Top 10, the closest being LOTR Fellowship.

Just.....2.....more...days......if I can just get by all the spoilers on the net until then..........

I seen it last night. To be honest I thought it was really good. As I expected it would be. Definitely not a number one movie but it will do really well in the cinema over the next few weeks. I don't know how it could be number 1 in just a few days. It must be the fanboys voting constantly in memory of ledger, who in fairness played the part brilliantly. I thought the sound design was particularity good. Haven't seen a film with such good sound since star wars 3 or maybe Hellboy.

Can't see it still being at #1 in a few weeks time. I remember when There Will Be Blood was released it was in the top 15, now it's slipped to #75, something similar will probably happen with The Dark Knight.

Will wait until I've seen it tonight until I make up my mind on whether it's deserving of the spot though!

I read Empire's review online last night and they gave it 5 stars even though they commented that the second act drags a bit and there are some other problems with the film.

Im glad i have avoided all the clips (bar the trailers in the cinema) and avoided spoiler reviews so i can judge it unpolluted

I dont really have a lot of respect for Empire's reviews these days. They seem to think everything there is any kind of buzz about is worthy of 5 stars.
That said, I have been waiting for this for ages, so this time I am really hoping that they are right.

Empire have been like that for years imo! Independence Day got 5 stars too!

Im glad you agree. Didnt want to go slating Empire on you if you were a fan. Different strokes and all.
They have a list of 5 star rated films on their website.
    Some of them are high-larious.

How did they give it 5 stars with those problems. I presume 5 stars is the best, and with a lagging second half among other problems, shoulda been brought down to 3 stars.

Theres a fairly interesting Stephen King open letter on the internet, criticizing critics for giving maximum stars too much. He used Spiderman 2 as an example. While it was a v good movie, it didnt deserve Robert Eberts 5 stars. You wont be thinking about it in 3 weeks, like you would the Godfather II etc.

Surely it cant be the greatest film of all time? Looks great, but..

Yeah imdb is ruined by fanboyism. On one hand you have fan boys who try get their favourite franchises/directors/actors as high as possible by giving everything to do with it ten stars, sometimes even giving 'rival' movies 1 star to make their faves look better by comparison.
Then there are the 'anti-fanboys' who have take it upon themselves to try even things out, by giving films they don't think should be as high in the list as they are 1 star ratings in order to try bring them down a notch.
It just ends up with films having loads of ten star and one star reviews, when in reality they probably deserve neither.
If everyone could just grow up (yeah I know that will never happen on imdb) and review movies without pre-conceived agendas it would be so much fairer.

Heck, I gave Jurassic Park 9/10 even though its one of my fave movies of all time, simply because its not a flawless movie.

I saw it last weekend and it is excellent. Easily an 8.5/9 out of 10 movie.

I was really looking forward to this movie... and still kinf of am. All this hype is kinda ruining it for me tho, I know I'm gonna go and expect the best film ever. I also know that by the time I actually get into the cinema to watch it, I'll be sick of hearing about it and won't enjoy it as much. Boo to the hypers. :(

I said it for shock tactics, I apologise. But that is the reason the film is so high so soon isn't it?

Well, whether or not Heath died the buzz was still there for those who followed the progress of the movie (including me) and the excellent marketing. I wanted to see if Jack Nicholsan could be dethroned with this movie and though I haven't seen it yet, from what I saw in the trailers I think I can expect a bloody great performance from Heath.

I mean, Javier Bardem got an Oscar for his role in No Country For Old Men. While he was brilliant in the bits that he talked, his role basically just consisted of him walking around the place silently with that pudding hair.

I'm still holding judgement on the whole Oscar thing until Thursday when I see it.

Well, I've seen it yesterday (advance screening at UCI blanch) and personally can't say a bad thing about it. Gave it 10/10 on IMDB cause imo it deserves it. Is it better then Godfather (nr 2 on IMDB), that I do not know, love both but I'd say that they're so different that any kind of comparion just doesn't make sense.

To those saying that Heath Ledger's death is the only reason why the movie is getting such high reviews, following such logic 'The Crow' should be considered the best movie in the universe cause Bradon Lee died while actually shooting one of the scenes, not months later (like Ledger). But hey, everyone can have their own opinion ;).

Well some of its fans really are insane and have taken to attacking anyone who criticizes the movie URL="http://www.imdb.com/news/ni0267035/"]link[/URL:
Newspaper critics who failed to shower The Dark Knight with undiluted praise have themselves been deluged with sometimes ferocious criticism from the film's fans, Los Angeles Times columnist Patrick Goldstein observed today (Friday). Goldstein, who says that he himself admires the film, notes that the latest critic to feel the heat is the Wall Street Journal's Joe Morgenstern. (Most reviews of the movie appeared last Wednesday or Thursday, in sync with the early release of the film in many cities; Morgenstern's appeared on Friday, the "official" release date.) Morgenstern told Goldstein, "I've gotten 250 or 300 e-mails, almost all with the vilest, most abusive language you could possibly imagine. I was stunned. These people aren't just discourteous. They're insane." The abusive attacks on Morgenstern spilled over onto other entertainment websites and blogs. "I write for an educated readership and usually the responses to my reviews are courteous and collegial," he remarked. "But this was really ugly. It did feel like a mob."

it was excellent, i really really loved it, but will agree it shouldnt be no.1 already...... it takes away from the classics like shawshank redemtion, godfather, pulp fiction, return of the king, star wars.............. i could go on for ever.

(dont let my sig fool you, its prob my fav film but still shouldnt be no.1)

Are we sure there's no internet petition or something organised by Ledger fans to get it up there? Like when Ronnie O'Brien was voted best footie player in the world :)

IMDB was a decent enough gauge of a film up until about 5 years ago.
    Its a shambles now.

I watched the film yesterday and again this evening and have to say.....I am a huge Batman fan.....totally gay fanboy Batman nut........I am not particularly interested in Heath Ledger. Up to now I had seen Brokeback Mountain......I completely missed the awesomeness of that movie.....as far as getting humped by Donnie Darko in a realistic manner goes....I can only assume Heath deserved that Oscar nom as I've not seen Darko poon any other cowboys........I don't think I saw Heath Ledger in any other films.........However,in what.January?when the guy died...I accepted it as a sad event, decent actor, young family, all that stuff........and I have read every bit of print about the dark knight for the last however long....

Now.....I went yesterday on my own to watch the film...I had seen the prologue on the net and went good and early to see the watchmen trailer (as I said, unapologetic fanboy).....no watchmen trailer in Mullingar at 2 o clock yesterday by the way......but anyway......for those that have seen the film.....from the moment the Joker performs his magic trick (making the pencil disappear) it was completely immaterial who had brought the character to life........it was the Joker on screen and it tore to ribbons anything Jack Nicholson ever did.............the Joker absolutely steals the movie...but I think it matters little that the guy is dead......I don't know enough about acting to know if he is good......but he was more convincing as a psychopath as anyone I have ever seen...........

........the movie was fantastic....anything about 2nd act dragging is lost on me as I thought the film was unrelenting......enough for 2 decent films pulverised (smash, boom, whack anyone?) into one behemoth of a film..........

5 stars??...........certainly the best comic movie this year....in a year when we got Iron Man,the hulk came good and Will Smith learnt to fly..............the best sequel ever??.........aliens,godfather 2 and empire might query that..........best Batman movie ever?............I would eat and **** my hat sir............and if the Joker is to appear to round off Nolans Batrilogy............I have not heard a better suggestion than Joseph Gordon-Levitt.....he is well able to act and that is all he needs to do.....Ledger already brought the character to life.

Piss and whine all you want.Dark Knight delivers all it promised in spades, and with bells on.No joke.

Oh noes some website with a flawed system has TDK as the number one film! The horror!

I don't pay any attention to fan reviews, just critics, who have a duty to give an unbiased opinion. And it has 90% among Top Critics, no-one can argue with that.

It's been a long time since critis were unbiased. Look at Harry Knowles, he's infamous for giving positive reviews to films whoms studios show him preferential treatment.

Harry Knowles is just a ginger fanboy.

The only critic I'd really pay much attention to is Roger Ebert. Even then i wouldn't agree with all of his ratings ... (he gave the original version of the hitcher zero stars!) ...

I like Ebert's style of reviewing in that reviews of films are relative, not absolute. Films cannot be compared to every other film made. So comparing Dark Knight to Godfather 2, or Independence Day to Citizen Kane is pointless.

(BTW I would happily give Independence Day 5 stars. Yes it is a silly movie, but it was never meant to be taken seriously, and at the time, the special effects were fantastic and blew a lot of people away.)

Just go and watch it and form your own opinion. Don't rely on "top critics" to tell you what its like. As do many people, I disagree with a lot of these "top critics" on a lot of films. The best judge of what you'll like is yourself.

I have seen it, twice, once on thursday and then again last night. My opinion is this; it's a phenomenal movie. One of the most enjoyable movies in years with excellent performances from all. I'm not afraid to say it's in my top 5 favourite movies. I just find it pathetic that some posters on here are blowing a gasket over something so trivial as it being No. 1 on imdb's website. They are probably the same people who say Ledger's performance is being overhyped by "fanboys" and in no way deserves an oscar nomination. These same people probably don't realise that Johnny Depp got nominated for his performance as Jack Sparrow.

saw it last night with the girlfriend with an open mind. i haven't read any reviews, but it is hard to avoid the fanboy fodder online. either way, it's a stunning film. batman begins was a stunning film in every way, and this just ups the ante by a good mile.

i never paid much attention to ledger. obviously i heard good things after brokeback, but it's not my kind of film (even if you remove the gay aspect). he was stunning in this film, but not once did i think about the fact that he's dead. i was completely lost in the film experience.

I doubt he'll get in to be honest, plus there are a few scenes that wouldn't be suitable for a 10 yr old imo.

I brought my 4 younger brothers to see it yesterday and my 11 year old brother had no problem getting in. Whil eit is fairly dark I recommend that you take him if he is a fan. I can still recall the day my Uncle rang my Dad and told him not to take me to see Batman Returns in the cinema, it still stands as one of the biggest disappointments of my life.
