Nothing to lock my bike to

I usually keep my bike in my apartment but have been getting hassle from the management about bringing it through the front entrance.
There is a big communal car garage with a code to open the gates and a lot of people leave their bikes in there (some quite expensive). I don't trust the integrity of the code, too many people know it.
But the main problem is that there isn't really anything to lock bikes to in there ! I can lock my bike "to itself" with the best locks in the world but it wouldn't stop someone just carrying it out to a waiting van. I've asked for brackets or a bike rack to be installed, but let's face it - it's never going to happen. I can't very well go drilling into the walls myself without permission either and even if I did install an anchor, who's to stop someone else from using it ?

So are there any other suggestions? The best I can come up with is to buy a big heavy motorbike chain which would stay in the Garage - it might just make someone skip over the bike if they didn't want the hassle of lugging it out and trying to cut through it.

If I was you I'd tell them you're going to keep it in your apartment until they sort out an adequate alternative

and maybe approach some of the other cyclists, especially the one's with expensive bikes to start pestering the managment company as well.

They can't insist that you leave it outside and not give you anything to lock it to.

I would advise against locking bikes in garages, mainly because it provides some cover for thieves to work on your lock in the dead of night.

What do the others who have their bikes in the garage do - are they unlocked?

    I completely agree with this.

+1 to this. Ultimately they are probably not going to stop you, even if it is forbidden in your agreement. I'd suggest carrying it to your apartment so as to be sure not to dirty the floor, etc.

Management companies always say these things and never back them up, I live in a complex and own the apartment, we have a bike cage in our underground garage that is also locked and then you can lock it to bike stands....even then I am not putting my bike their, theives have gotten in and still stole bikes (and we don't use codes we use keys)....You will be amazed at who lives in your block...they could be the ones stealing your bike....

I keep mine in the apartment in the hall, I pay 2,000 + in management fees, if they want to stop me carrying my bike to my apartment from the lift, i.e. not touching the ground, then they must stop people with prams and buggies etc, they also have wheels (mostly 4) and probably carry even more dirt....so I don't see why bikes are targeted unless you put them on the balcony....

Hi guys - Yes I am still bringing my bike into the apartment for the time being. As I am a tenant I have less control over how long I will be able to do this for. My landlord is reasonbly sympathetic and has told me I can continue to keep the bike in the apartment until there is a better solution..but it is still a pain getting verbally accosted by one particular managment committee member who seems to generally hang around waiting to "catch" people doing things.

In the end if it becomes a big enough issue, it will be time to move on. As regards other bikes in the garage. Some have quite good locks - one guy has the wheel locked to the frame with a fagedaboutit u lock, as well as a chain. Again anyone could come along and carry it out..

I find it hard to believe there's *nothing* to lock it to. Even in my bedroom, I could lock the bike to the radiator if I wanted...
