    Hi all,

Can anyone recommend a good PMR 2 way radio that could be used for hillwalking and paintballing etc.

Basically, I'm after a small handset with a decent range. Importantly, I need a good quality boom mic to go with it. I understand theres a big difference in voice/reception quality between a 1 and 2 pin headset.

I'm trawling through maplin and ebay.. and I'm pretty much lost!

Maybe someone here might have a specific recommendation of what brands are good and what to avoid?

    Thanks!

The pins on the headset makes no difference. That's just cosmetic.

They all have about the same range.

The 200 Euro ones are no better than 40 Euro per pair models for what you want. Headsets can be adapted from two pin radio to single pin. A twin pin plug can be cut off and single pin plug wired if you know the connections.

Most have VOX which allows handsfree operation. You can also easily adapt a €8 PC headset + mic (I've seen these at 2 Euro!), by rewiring plug or using adaptor and they work well. Throat mics can be uncomfortable, expensive, take practice to use and may not be compatible with most radios. The flexible boom mic /head set will work with any set that takes external mic.

Some sets only take external earpiece, but will work well in VOX mode clipped to neckline/ lapel with either earphone of regular MP3 player ear bud.

The Motorola XTN 446MHz series of radios would be very suitable to the task in hand.
