PSN store games

    Hi all,

first of all sorry if I am repeating an existing thread.

I am in the mood for some new games for my PS3 now that I have exausted all the single-player elements of the games I have bought from game-shops (and nothing else is grabbing my attention out there at the mo).

So I am looking at the playstation store and trying to decide what games to pick up there. Pixel-junk thingy looks good, as does everyday shooter.

Anybody have any suggestions, has anybody bought a large amount of these games and have a lot of critique to offer ?? It is quite hard to find decent reviews of these games sometime (i have looked in the usual areas - gamespot, IGN, 1-up and so on).

I am open to almost any type of game, so dont worry about different genres.

    Over to you.

Try Super Stardust HD. Only got it myself because of the trophy support but it is awesome.

Everyday SHooter and PixelJunk Monsters are also very good games.

Try Tekken Online too. A bit more expensive but imo well worth it.

Super Stardust HD and Tekken are worth it.

DO NOT get echochrome or elefunk.

Echochrome, whilst interesting is not worth the money, get it off a friend for free if you must play it, then wait for Fez to get released on the PC :D

    1/5

Elefunk, I dunno, there just isn't enough there to make me like it, you build a bridge and then make an elephant walk across it to see if it supports his weight, but you are very restricted in how you build the bridge. I was expecting something like Lemmings but ended up with a pretty looking turd of a game.

    2/5

Other PSN store games that i've got:

Super Stardust HD, This game should be at the top of your list, it really is excellent, and the 2 expansions for it are also worth it as they open up a load of extra gameplay modes. Now with trophies its even better. I will usually play this game at least once a week to try and beat my own high scores, and the ones from people in my friends list.

    5/5

Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection, bit expensive for a store game but definitely worth it as its the full game. Will usually play a few rounds of it whenever some friends come over. Good game to tide you over until Soul Caliber comes out :D

    4/5

loco roco cocoreccho, its more like an animated wallpaper then a game really, you just move some Loco Rocos around a map, aided by some sixaxis features and get them into this container to unlock another part of the level. I've played very little of it as the music is very irritating.

    3/5

Blast Factor, its like a poor mans Stardust that's more expensive. It's the same type of gameplay but without the weapon upgrades, limited space to move in and this REALLY IRRITATING sixaxis triggered weapon.

    3/5

PixelJunk Monsters, really really like this game. I'm a big fan of tower defense games anyway but this game takes that format and mixes it around a bit by giving you control of a character who builds the towers. Playing through it with the missus atm as the coop play is brilliant. Heres a tip for you, steer clear of ever using the Freeze or Hive Towers.

    5/5

Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, Great game, if you ever liked Tetris, Puyo Puyo or Columns you'll like this game. The multiplayer is very good also.

    5/5

Fatal Inertia EX, its a real middle of the road game, its like a less interesting version of Wipeout. Good for a few rounds every now and again but nothing amazing. I'd wait until Wipeout HD is released tbh

    3/5

Dark Mist, its a bit like Stardust but instead of being in a ship you are running around shooting things. There is really no story to it as its shamelessly a leader board game like Stardust. Its pretty good though, although the irritating thing is that your score resets to zero if you die once before completing it, and the end boss is just hard enough to ensure that you probably will die at least once.

    3/5

On top of this I'd recommend the Ninja Gaiden: Sigma and Naruto: Storm demo as they are pretty good.

Super Stardust HD, as everyone has said, is the best one. Best fast paced old-fashioned twin stick shooter in existence.

Loco Roco Cocorecho is also well worth picking up and it's ridiculously cheap, it's really hard to explain how it plays but just try it, you won't regret it.

Gripshift is an old one, but still a very good one with a ton of content for your money. It's a driving / puzzle hybrid where you have to traverse tracks covered in stunts and jumps collecting items and reaching the finish, very good game.

If you want something multiplayer I'd recommend Calling All Cars, very fast paced, very random and great fun for a bunch of people on the couch. Not worth it if you're playing single player or online though, the fun is more about shouting at people than real skill.

thanks to all that have replied (esp L31mr0d - great rundown of the various games)

Have seen PAIN being promoted heavily by the store - does anybody know what style of game it is ??

    keep the ideas coming folks.

I have pain - its quite good - basically, you have a giant catapult, which you aim - when you fire, you launch your character through the air, and get points for pain caused, and the damage that ensues - you can rack up massive combos with well placed shots.

Itsgot it's own trophy system, which basically provides the incentive to play - you get awards and unlock stuff for pulling off various trick shots, and causing improbable events.

Example: yesterday, I unlocked a new game mode by causing a subway train to derail and land on top of a granny (actually, I grabbed the granny mid-flight, dragged her down a flight of stairs into the subway station and underneath the oncoming train!)

All in all, Good craic! It's also slated for a big expansion soon, and full PSN trophy support.

On a related note, get Super Stardust HD - easily the best game on PSN.

I find Everyday shooter increadably addictive... Superstardust is Briliant no HD tv should be without it!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,653 ✭✭✭steviec

If you're familiar with Crash mode from the Burnout games, Pain is almost exactly the same as that except you fire a guy from a catapult rather than crashing a car.

I found it very repetitive but it's hard not to have fun in multiplayer.

I bought PAIN last night along with Super Stardust HD - The above description for PAIN is spot on. It is great fun, but could do with more than 1 map (but I am sure this is something that will be released as an add-on, as opposed to the endless character packs)

Super Stardust is addictive and hard to put down - looks glorious on the big HDTV.

Yet again thanks for all the help and keep em coming.

I'd wait for Street Fighter 2 HD, a real classic. Take off the rose tinted specs and MK2 is a load of rancid old ****.

I would prefer MK3 myself, feel that is the best game of the series, but 2 ain't bad to skote a few memories of the arcade days.

Does anybody have a date or ETA for Street Fighter 2 HD for the playstation store ?? Would love to get that game and get online !!!

Get out of here! I was way too harsh on MK2. It's playable and the juggle combo system is decent enough the only problem is that it's really boring since it's so simple and characters only differ in terms on their special moves. It's just outclassed by most of the competition.

MK3 on the other hand is a flat out hands down mess of a game. The button memorisation combos are crap and it's really badly balanced.

Anybody get the siren blood curse game? I played the demo last night and while I loved the creepy atmosphere I found it quite difficult. :o

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 463 ✭✭elgriff

I quite like high velocity bowling. it uses the motion controls on the sixaxis, there is a bit of a learning curve, but its worth getting into

survival horrors are supposed to be difficult. The odds always have to be stacked against you to raise the tension. Like true horror movies, it wouldn't be as scary if the lead protagonist was Rambo.

Was actually considering getting this but i'll wait until there are a few reviews of it as survival horrors can be very hit and miss.

Is the PSN store incredibly slow to download for anyone else? I'm currently getting Siren pack 1 and it's going at about 1mb every two minutes or so. Downloading demos or games on the ps3 has always been a lot slower for me than on the wii or xbox.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,749 ✭✭✭✭wes

The PSN store is pretty fast for me. It tool all day to download Siren for me, but considering the size that was not unexpected.

I have played the first couple of chapters of Siren and I taught it was pretty good so far.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 798 ✭✭✭Plascebo

Is siren blood only available via download? Had a look at it on the PSN store and when you add all the chapters up it is very expensive.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,317 ✭✭✭CombatCow

It's $39.00 if you buy the bundled chapters, i played the demo and found the camera really annoying, it detracted from the fun of the game for me.

You can only get it online in Europe and the US, but its on Blue Ray in Japan and you can import it and it has a English language option.

Its 30 euro if you buy all the parts in 1 go. Buying them seperate is more expensive.

so tekken is worth the money is it? is it proper tekken 5? like the full game with full story mode? as the write up on it just mentions online stuff!

Its the full game with all the characters but with an online mode built-in. The online mode is the most important part as it is the same Tekken 5 game underneath, as in PS2 graphics.

    Awesome game though.

Yeah, it annoyed the feck outta me at the start too, but once you get your head around what's actually happening it's not too bad at all. Basically the left stick is used to move, while the right stick controls where you're looking/shining your flashlight.

A very tense, atmospheric game, that's not without it's flaws, but overall it's a very satisfying play. Really glad I bought the whole thing in one :)

I'd love to see Killer Instinct on PS3.
Just hearing that "Ultraaaaaaa combo" again would be worth it.:D
Streetfighter 2 i also look forward to but I want a proper arcade joystick for it.

Hearing a lot of different things as regards Siren: blood curse, both good and bad. A few people have reminded me of the woeful game of which this is a sequel/spin-off - Forbidden Siren.

Maybe the people that are saying it is not all that are just having flashbacks to the first game. After all, siren: blood curse looks very good, graphically speaking and it is a new game, not just a remake of the first one.

Looking forward, what games have been slated for release, both original and re-releases ?? Do we have any dates or can any be found ??

I was going to consider asking what games would you like to see, but that is a can of worms that can remain unoppened in my view (can only read so many posts saying "OMG - Goldeneye would be soooooooooooooooo cool :D:D:D:D:D")

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,509 ✭✭✭NotorietyH

I picked up Pixel Junk Monsters the other day, it's only $5 on the US store. Jesus it's addictive. Started playing it at around 7:30 last night and the next time I looked at my watch it was 1am. Great little game, well worth it for that price.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 657 ✭✭✭irishash

bought PixelJunk Eden last night - saw it at E3 and it looked interesting.

It is a simple game, all one button control, but is very addictive. I suppose the game it is most similar to, would be FLOW. The only gripe at this early stage is that while there are various gardens, they are all quite alike and with up to 5 ways to finish the garden, it gets a little repetitive.

But it is a good way to relax playing this game with music that is the right side of annoying !!

I think Wipeout HD is easily the best game on PSN.
