Compaq US laptop warranty valid in Ireland?

    A relation of mine got a laptop (Compaq Presario) as a birthday present from her son in the US a while back. Unfortunately it seems to have had a faulty motherboard (short of some kind) since she got. I got to have a look at it myself last night and I suspect the motherboard needs replacement.

    Would anyone have any idea if the warranty is valid in Ireland? I checked the HP site and there is a mention of a world wide warranty but it appears to still be "under development".

    I am not sure. I would suggest calling in to support, but not giving them the laptops serial number or name.

    Just ask them hypothetically or give them a different name to look up and tell them you don't have it with you.

    This way if they won't honor it, you still have the option of shipping it to the US if that would be cheaper.

    Thanks. Its a thought. I suspect when I call all I will get is a scripted answer that boils down to no. I suspect a new laptop might be cheaper than getting it repaired ultimately...

    I had no problem with the warranty on my US purchased HP Pavillion laptop when it went bogey a few years back after I had moved back to Ireland.

    I would be surprised if they didn't honour the warranty, even if you are not in the US.

    I'd say most of the big companies that have operations here would honour the wattanty. It would only be in the case of a brand that is only operating in the US that I would get worried. You should be fine.

    Compaq is owned by HP afaik - there shouldnt be an issue.

    I had a HP laptop previously and could not fault their repair service - it had worldwide service.

    Thanks to you all for the helpful input on this. I called HP and there seems to be no problem with the warranty thankfully.

    After having a pretty informed conversation with the HP tech support person (which was a pleasant surprise, the script was not being adhered to fully) it looks like a bios update "may" have solved the issue! Apparently various HP/Compaq laptops were running hot due to some issue with the fan control. Having updated the bios to resolve this, I've spent the evening trying to make the machine die. No success so far. I should have thought of the heat issue sooner as I couldn't get the machine to even start up sometimes and of course it wouldn't if it had overheated.

    Currently running a torture test on the machine using Prime95 to try and stress it heavily and overheat it again. Looking good so far. Fingers crossed. I just thought I'd mention it for anyone in a similar boat.
