HI, I WAS THINKING OF CHANGING FROM NTL ANALOGUE TO DIGITAL BUT I HAVE A FEW QUESTIONS ABOUT THE SERVICE
    1) IS IT ACTUALLY CHEAPER THAN THE ANALOGUE PACKAGE?
    2) DOES IT COME WITH TELETEXT? ( I HEARD YOU STILL KEEP YOUR ANALOGUE CONNECTION FOR TELETEXT - BUT HOW CAN YOU USE TWO AT THE SAME TIME??
    3) CAN I USE MY CURRENT SPLITTER TO ROUTE THE DIGITAL SIGNAL TO OTHER TV'S IN MY HOUSE?
    4) DO YOU NEED A TV WITH DIGITAL INPUTS??
    5) DO YOU STILL KEEP THE BASIC NTL ANALOGUE CHANNELS?
    CHEERS!:D:pac:

HI, I WAS THINKING OF CHANGING FROM NTL ANALOGUE TO DIGITAL BUT I HAVE A FEW QUESTIONS ABOUT THE SERVICE

    Firstly, take CAPS LOCK off...
    1) IS IT ACTUALLY CHEAPER THAN THE ANALOGUE PACKAGE?

When I signed up you paid for digital on-top of your analogue package. UPC's website is unclear as to whether this is still the case...
    2) DOES IT COME WITH TELETEXT? ( I HEARD YOU STILL KEEP YOUR ANALOGUE CONNECTION FOR TELETEXT - BUT HOW CAN YOU USE TWO AT THE SAME TIME??

Yes. In fact new UPC Mediaboxes come with a teletext decoder so you can view teletext even on TVs without teletext.Even on old NTL boxes, while it used to be the case that you needed to go back to analogue, you haven't had to do that for ages now - teletext is carried on several digital channels.
    3) CAN I USE MY CURRENT SPLITTER TO ROUTE THE DIGITAL SIGNAL TO OTHER TV'S IN MY HOUSE?

Yes, but wouldn't recommend it, the signal degrades. Get UPC to install extra points. Even if you do manage to do it properly you'll need a set-top-box for each TV set (or you'll have to watch the same channel on all of them).
    4) DO YOU NEED A TV WITH DIGITAL INPUTS??

No, but you do need a TV with SCART-in. Or if you have a VCR with SCART-in you can use that too. There does exist RF-out on the current boxes but its only analogue pass-through. Which ties in nicely with...
    5) DO YOU STILL KEEP THE BASIC NTL ANALOGUE CHANNELS?
    CHEERS!:D:pac:

Yes, for as long as they remain available in your area.

    first, thanks for the reply
but im confused about a few things
am i correct in saying the tv receives the signal from the box via a scart cable?
so i would need some kind of powered multi-scart splitter?
do you pay for every extra set top box you order?
can i buy these boxes somewhere else?
what does it mean "as long as they remain available in your area" re: the analogue channels
and do you still pay two bills to ntl? i.e. analogue and digital packages??
    cheers!:pac:

Yes the tv recieves the signal via scart cable
you have to pay 8.50 pm for any extra boxes
no you cany buy them somewhere else legally anyway
and you will keep the analogue channels just view them on a digital box
and only pay one bill of 20e pm or 23e pm if you do not pay by direct debit
    hope this helps

what does it mean "as long as they remain available in your area" re: the analogue channels

At some point, Chorus NTL plan to switch off the analogue channels in each area. This will not doubt be done franchise-by-franchise and be a slow process. When this happens, you will no longer be able to receive the analogue channels and you will need a digital set-top-box to view any channels.

Currently, two networks have had their analogue switched off: the old Cork Communications cable network in Cork, and the NTL MMDS network. In the case of the former its' not a total switch-off - the Irish terrestrials are still broadcasting. But on NTL MMDS the entire analogue signal is switched off.

No, just one bill for the lot.

    .

Does this apply to analogue subscribers also? Will they be "forced" to go digital?

Yes. The EU have set a switch off date for analogue. It will be a thing of the past.

The EU switch off date doesn't apply to cable, only to Terrestrial (aerial). UPC could keep analogue cable for ever if they wanted to, however in time it is in UPC's own interest to switch off the analogue service (less piracy, more bandwidth for more digital channels, HD channels, BB and VoD).
