has anyone imported a van crew cab and taken out the back seats to get it classed as a commercial van so as to pay €50 instead of 13.3% VRT?

Why would you do this? why not just buy the commercial? When you remove the back seats you have to irreversibly disable seatbelt mounting points (weld or ring off) so as its clear that you can't just pop them back in after its certified as a commercial.

Not sure on the exact workings, but I would think a crew cab would still be classified as a commercial. VERY open to correction on that though.

Mitisubishi are doing this now. They are selling L200's with the rear seats removed. Around €25k IIRC.
VRT on a crew cab is normally 13% so there are savings to be made.

Imported a VW van, heres my experience for those of you thinking of importing a van from the UK.

    - Transfered my insurance to the van I decided to buy before I left Ireland.

    - Flew over early Monday morning to pick up van after carefully picking a van from autotrader.co.uk. I bought a van from a garage, it had a full dealership service history and it was spotless.

    - I didn't by any return ticket or ferry ticket in case things didn't go right.

    - Once i bought the van I had my brother book my ferry ticket (for the Tuesday morning ferry at 3am) online so that I was able to rock up to the ferry terminal with a booking number. So I found it very helpful to have someone next to a computer to take care of bookings and financial transactions. Don't forget to bring a pillow and blanket for the night time ferry!! - I did... and ear plugs - essential

    - Once I arrived in Ireland I registered it with the VRT office costing €50.

    - Next thing to do is get a DOE done on it, check with the DOE centre if they can weigh the van also and this might save you money. I weighed mine in the city recycling centre for €25.

    - Once I had my DOE cert I went to the tax office and taxed it and submitted the DOE cert in order to get the registration certificate.

    - One week later the registration cert arrived in the post.Job Done.

    - Saved €7000 approx

To get past that you get some small squares of metal, put a blob a weld on each side & stick em over the seatbelt eyes etc with silicone!! Looks like they welded on & ya just pop em off after the test ;)
