According to a British Open blog on ESPN.com, golf writer Jason Sobel says that Retief Goosen claimed Harrington's wrist injury was faked.
    6:21 p.m.: E-mail from J.J. in Parts Unknown:
Do you think Harrington's wrist injury is real, or was it just a deceitful tactic used to get attention?

I wasn't sure, so I asked Retief Goosen. He said Harrington was faking it the whole time and couldn't have played like that if he was really injured.

Meanwhile, Harrington just tapped in his eagle putt (well, it was about a 6-footer). He moves to 3-over. Up 4 on the final hole. So … who thinks he could hop on the 18th tee box right now and still win this for him? Just need to make triple-bogey. I know I can do it. I'm great at making triple-bogeys.

Personally I think that's a ludicrous statement if it's true. I mailed the author asking whether it was true or a tongue-in-cheek comment. I think Harrington is a sportsman who's honesty is unimpeachable, and I can't see him being someone who would even overstate an injury to give himself an advantage.

didn't he have a go at Tiger after the US Open too. didn't he say that he only complained about his knee after a bad shot. might be a touch of sour grapes. that is if the above is true

The relationship between Harrington and Goosen hasn't always been the best, they have had what could be called a few minor run-ins.

I remember when both were in the running for the order of merit some years back both players gave each other little digs in the press.

Goosen could and very likely is jealous that Harrington won!!!

And funnily enough, whenever Woods went down in pain, his drive usually split the fairway :pac:

      I knew it sounded familiar!

According to the local paper in Southport, Goosen was asked about the comparisons on Friday.
SOUTH African Retief Goosen wouldn’t be drawn into more controversy by comparing the injuries of Tiger Woods and Padraig Harrington.

Following the US Open, where world number one Woods went through the tournament with a knee injury, Goosen said he felt the American had played on its severity.

Goosen implied that Tiger had used the knee problem to his advantage as he beat Rocco Mediate in a dramatic play-off. When asked about Harrington’s wrist problem, the South African palmed the question away in favour of concentrating on the golf and his round of 71.

He said: “Padraig played extremely well today, he putted very well and it was a great round of golf he shot today and no I don’t want to talk about Tiger’s injury.

      jaysus relax a bit

I'm relaxed, it was a simple email. ;)

      Anyway, he replied, and said:

"Sarcasm, Playing off his comments about TW [sic] after the US Open...J" :P

So, my bad for starting the thread over nothing!

That's hilarious that you mailed him and scary that he felt the need to reply. Surely the sarcasm was obvious?

Don't really think there's any problem between Retieeeth and PHarrington? Unless someone has examples?
Poor Retief was never going to allow himself to get burned twice over "injured" champions.

No, when he 'went down in pain', most of the shots were about 50 yards right

Anyway, thought there might have been a bit of truth in it seeing as how they were partners for the first two rounds and Retief has form in this department ;)
