Career Break - Civil Service

I am nearing the end of my probation in a couple of weeks time and I am looking to get a career break for 2 years.

I am just wondering how easy it is to get? Do HR put up a bit of a fight giving it to people?

I know my HR dept is not exactly the swiftest in dealing with queries or any other type of correspondence they receive but I am trying to think of all the obstacles they might try and put in my way..

My probation was only a year long and as I said I am looking for a break for 2 years, will this be possible?

Is there a form to fill out or do you just write in and explain the situation?

Has anyone else done this? Any advice?

Perhaps it has changed recently but i was told that after your year probation you would need to complete another year service before you would be considered for Career Breaks.

After that you can take up to 5 years.

You get the opportunity to avail of 2 Career Breaks.

A career break depends on your HEO and HR - if your team don't really need you then they are granted. I know 2 CO's who didn't get them the first time they applied.

I am pretty sure i read here though of due to the recession that there is no guarentee you will be taken back after your career break. Basicaly you may have to wait for the recruitment freeze to be over or for an opportunity to arise in your dept.

I got an email from HR and it seems ok. After the probation you can apply straight away.

She attached the conditions and various bits of info and basically states that you are guaranteed a job after your career break is up should you wish to have it so it's looking good for me... Fingers crossed.

You get the opportunity to avail of 2 Career Breaks.

It is now possible to take 3 career breaks, this change was brought in this year.
