sold that stupid little white box a few weeks ago. For me the console has been a total waste of time. Its just gimmick after gimmick after gimmick. Lets throw out a couple of good games like mario and zelda and then keep plugging more and more plastic crap to make it look interactive. Seriously the amount of add on rubbish is incredible. I think they've pissed a lot of people off with this.
For me selling it was the best move I made and that was before seeing that rubbish line up. I still have my xbox 360 and play it every day because it's a serious games console with fantastic games. I prefer it to the ps3 for a few reasons. Mainly because of Gears of War and Halo but along with that online is just fantastic and the games are cheap enough to pick up.
Why oh why oh why would anyone want the wii when there are two other consoles out there that are 20 times no .. a hundred times better in every way.
Nintendo, its all over. Your going out the of console business like sega. Its only a matter of time before people cop on to the crap they've been sold. Thank god for Microsoft (theres a statement I never thought Id make) and thank god for Sony too cause it keeps the battle alive and will do well in the long run with the hardware available.

Yeah they lost a lot of money with this Wii thing, they're done for now.

But if you wanted a 'serious console' you should have looked at all the videos Nintendo showed before the Wii's launch. It was Wii Sports and Warioware and such. Nintendo make Mario and Zelda and games like that, not bang bang shooty games, you should expect five years between these games but this time there are games for a different audience in between.

    Very true

OP, remind me again how much MS or Sony have made per console

To be honest I'm finding this whole generation of new consoles very meh and samey. So samey that for the first time in about 16 years I haven't bought the 'latest most powerful' beast. Gears of War and Halo 3? Both yawnfests. I've shot a million aliens in a thousand games before. What's new this time? Nothing. Sure, they look pretty damn good, but so fu*king what?

At least Nintendo are attempting something innovative. They might not be getting it right every time, but I still take my hat off to them for trying something different in an industry that has gotten all too stagnant.

On a related note, Smash Bros Brawl is the most fun I've had with a new release in a very long time.

gears of war is a sensational game. Have you played it through?? If not why not.. and the online is fantastic!!
As for mario brawl, I just dont like it to be honest. Tried it, didnt like it. Simple as.
Gears of war and Halo I'll play again and again and again. Not because of visuals but because the gameplay is so good and the online aspect is amazing which is another problem for the wii. A next gen console without the capability to even talk to the person online... what the hell?

I played Halo when it came out, thought it was over-hyped pants..gave Halo 2 a miss. Played Halo 3 recently and I really can't see any development game play wise since 1. It's the same bloody game just with flashier graphics (And to be honest, they're not too flashy looking compared to some other games out right now).
The only reason it's so popular is because it was marketed really really well. Halo is and will always been an extremely average game. I just don't get the hype.

Gears of War is fun for about ten minutes. Till you then realize you're actually repeating the same thing over and over...and over.

I don't really care if the Wii is crap online either to be honest. Consoles for me were never about online play. If I want that I'll use my PC.

And as for Brawl, any game that allows you to be Sonic and kick Lumps out of Mario in Green Hill Zone is up there amongst the greatest games of all time!

I am getting sick and tired of lazy developers producing on-line heavy games. They don't bother with game play anymore, or even proper 2 player.

Which is why I still am holding out hope for FF-XIII

Untill then I have to get Brawl and Kart an make do:rolleyes:

Nintendo have said that they didn't show their core games at E3 this year because they are unhappy with the new E3. Just hope it's true.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,585 ✭✭✭Jerichoholic

Well, they did show a new Animal Crossing, which will be fantastic! Although I do agree with the original post about selling the Wii. I'm not happy at all with it, standard def on HDTV is stupid in this day and age. I reckon I'll nail Zelda and then sell, sell, sell!

    Although....Animal Crossing.......

    Hmmmm.

Also Gears of War in HD on the level where the rain is beating down is the most spectacular thing I have ever seen in a game.

Use a component cable. You can up the display to 480p from standard. It's not true HD but it looks nice and crisp.

    Still boring though :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,585 ✭✭✭Jerichoholic

Yeah, I got all the cables for it and it's in 480 as you say. Still looks bad compared to Xbox and PS3, in this new gen. I know it's not meant to be but still. Annoys me.

Love Zelda though, even though it could probably been done on the N64. :)

Strangely enough, that was one game I didn't enjoy.

Me + 3d Zelda games do not sit well. I just don't get them. Fantastic in 2d..but that extra added dimension takes the magic away. Or something. I can't quite explain it.

As you can probably imagine, I loved Phantom Hourglass :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,585 ✭✭✭Jerichoholic

Yeah I'm still lovin' the hourgalss, but it was the Ocarina of time that sold me on Zelda in a mad obsessive way!

360 or ps3 whichever your personal preference in exclusives is, are the way forward. Simple as. Wii promised so much but so far has provided a few good games and other than that just a lot of gimmicks. People will get sick of it and will sell them (like me) or throw them in the bin whichever they feel is more appropriate. If I hadnt needed the cash I would have thrown it out so as not to dissapoint the poor person who bought it from me. He'll learn soon enough I suppose.

haha bin it is so by the looks of it.
Plus this wii speak is really the whole case in point. Its add on after add on after gimmick after gimmick.
They could have brought this out from the start but they wanted to use it as an add on. Another way of getting people to fork out more money.

I love the wii. I'm bored senseless of graphic heavy snorefests the op mentioned. To me there's no difference between any of the games. The skill involved in the new megaman looks like it will dwarf any other game coming out soon. Halo me arse. Dull dull monotonous game repeated 3 times.

SBB is great fun with friends in arcade or online. Fast furious and serious skill needed to not get pelted arouns the place. If you want to stick to your easy option wander around complete the mission kill the baddie zzzzzzzzzzz games do it, but don't start a topic in the nintendo forum with no objective other than to talk shi-te.

    what a crap thread

The Wii, XB360 & PS3 are only in the same "gen" category because of the dates they came out

Its stupid to compare the Wii to the other 2, they're aimed at 2 very different crowds

You'd be more likely to get crap games on the PS3 and 360, cos you can hide a crap game behind amazing graphics, but you cant hide an amazing game behind average graphics

And the Wii is somethin very different, its refreshing

Microsoft & Sony took no chances. all they've ever really done was extend the specs range

    unreggd wrote: »

I say Sony took a fairly big chance with Blu-ray especially if it didn't win the format war.

I have a Wii and 360. Play the 360 alot moe than the Wii as the games I love on the Wii are few and far between. The amount of shiny graphics games with no gameplay is equal to the number of boring, lazy mini-game compilations out on the Wii.

I'll still keep my Wii though and break it out at parties.

As for the amount of peripherals on the Wii. Other companies are looking at the Wii's success and launching a good few of there own peripherals.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,749 ✭✭✭CCCP^

Unreggd makes a pretty good point. The Wii is a gamecube with motion sensor. The Op is entitled to his opinion, but it's nonsense - Nintendo are not going to go out of business like Sega, how many machines have they sold compared to the others so far?

Except Gears of War's online mode is pretty bad. It was an afterthought that was probably shoved in at the very end. Nice bit of glitch abuse and plenty of lag issues last time I played. As far as Halo is concerned, it's average.

The Wii is very disappointing in my opinion. I only have a handful of games that I actually like for it and Nintendo does not seem to care about us anymore. Innovation sounds great and all but if innovation is crappy non-games and mini-game compilations that are in no way fun then I don't think I like innovation.

Rather than cater for both markets Nintendo is pretty much going all casual with a decent title thrown here or there to make us shut up. (Which reminds me, I just watched a video where what's-her-face just told us to keep playing Mario Kart and Smash Bros. That's not very reassuring.) I buy Nintendo consoles so I can play their good IPs which the majority of have pretty much no sign of appearing.

The 360 is great and all but it doesn't really have that much of a varied library. Most decent titles are shooters. I still play it much more than my Wii which I only played for Brawl at the moment.

Now with that said, I think the original poster is just being a troll to be honest. It reminds me too much of PC Gamers who troll 360 forums even though they don't have a 360.

You're missing the point of the Wii. Sony and MS have thrown crazy money at their machines in order to try to win a war. They went all out with spec's that were previously unheard of from a hardware point of view. Nintendo realised that they can't compete with those two on a hardware view point, as there are only a handful of companies in the world can throw that level of cash at gaming in a bid to come out on top. Nintendo did something else that was becoming unheard of, they used their heads. The DS is a clever device, the Wii is a clever device. If you don't like them that's fine, but what's a PS3 only a jazzed up PS2, and a 360 only a jazzed up Xbox.
Funny how MS and Sony copied Nintendo's designs in the past too, they've innovated nothing between them. You think it's great that Sony and MS are there, funny, I think it's a shame that it's not still Nintendo vs Sega, the real game console developers.
I own a 360 because it's an excellent machine, yes. But it's excellent in a way that's just better than the previous versions of anything. I own a Wii because it's new and different. Watch for future PS4's and Xbox 1000's or whatever and I'll bet they'll have more use of motion sensing, and then it'll be up to Nintendo to actually think of something else new for the other pair to copy.
Like it or not, the gaming world needs all three companies competing, and whether you like the Wii or not, the gaming world would not be what it might be in 10 years time if Nintendo were to disappear right now.
Edit : Incidently, Gears of War and Halo 3 are gathering more dust than any other game I own!! I use the 360 for driving games and GTA4

They took a chance, but not in order to bring something new to a gaming machine, they took a chance in order to win the war! They knew that the PS3 would sell, and because of that people would already have a next gen player in their house, so no need to buy a HD-DVD player.
I actually hate the whole idea of throw money at it and you're idea will be best attitude, but that's the way the world works.

Gameplay > Gfx and always will be.

    Innovation > Repetitiveness.

The Wi offered something new and sales suggest that. You won't see your mother or grandmother playing Halo 10 or Gran Turismo 56 but the Wii has an appeal to the masses that the 'hardcore' gamers post Dreamcast can't fathom.

    Goddamn PC elitists...

You do have a point though, more people spend their time on Solitaire & web-based Flash games than with any console (though the mobile phone & DS rake in lots of game time, too)

I've only just got a Wii myself about a month ago and find it to be much better than the 360, as has been said gears of war is the most repetitive game ever, all hidden behind stunning graphics, halo 3 was also extremely dissapointing so much so that I haven't even bothered to finish it. Then you have plenty of other let downs such as hidden planet.

I have a ds since xmas and find it to be the best console of this generation, really really fun games, theres no fancy graphics or crap to get in the way of the pure fun. A huge choice of games to cover any need.

So far find the wii to be pretty good too, have SMBB, Mario Kart, Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 and downloaded Lost Winds from WiiWare, found them all to be excellent games, nothing can compete to playing against friends with either SMBB or Mario Kart and nothing compares to the innovation of Pes 2008 on either sony or microsofts systems.

Picking up a Wii now will seem great but the problem people have with it is the same problem they had with the N64 and Wii. Everyone who has had one since launch has been waiting months in between the launch of a decent game and wit the recent terrible showing at E3 it's going to be a very poor run up to Christmas as well. YEas games like Mario Galaxy, Zelda and Smash Bros. are some of the best this generation but the 360 seems to be getting something essential almost every month and the PS3 is getting a lot of decent 3rd party multiplatform games.

to the OP, nintendo will go out of business?

perhaps you should have done some research.

the Xbox 360 was released on 22nd november 2005. As of April 25 2008, they have sold 19 Million consoles worldwide. MS only expect to start making money from the consoles themselves from this year on, they have not made any money from the console before hand. Also take into accoun the fact they ahve had to put aside around $1billion for bricked consoles.

    http://www.engadget.com/2007/07/05/xbox-360-warranty-extended-to-three-years

now, the PS3 was released on 11th November 2006. Since that time, they have sold 12.81 million consoles, as of march 31st this year. Every unit sold made a loss of around $250, which meant that at the end fo their fiscal year 2007, Sony games division had an operating loss of $1.97 billion. http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/ps3-launch-damages-sony-profits
they recently announced that they hope to start making profits by early 2009. http://uk.reuters.com/article/technology-media-telco-SP/idUKN0737530820080107?feedType=RSS&feedName=technology-media-telco-SP

Onto the Wii. released on November 19th, 2006. They have sold 24.45 million units be end of march this year. That means they have sold roughly double the amount of PS3's, despite being available for the same time and that even it is a year younger, it has sold 5 million more that the 360.
Oh, and Nintendo actually make a profit on teh Wii consoles. $19 in japan, $49 in the US and $79 in Europe

    http://seekingalpha.com/article/34357-game-console-wars-ii-nintendo-shaves-off-profits-leaving-competition-scruffy
    http://www.gamedaily.com/articles/features/report-nintendo-makes-about-49-per-wii-sold-in-us/70921/?biz=1

So, as you can see, Nintendo are doing just fine, i doubt they will go the way of Sega at all. You didnt like the Wii, thats fine. You just want shiny graphics and to blow stuff up, thats ok. But dont get so pissed off at nintendo that they dont cater for your needs. Most people would have done research and known what type of games would be out for the Wii. I havent been disappointed, i have my 360 as well so im content.

but basically, you're talking bollix about nintendo losing money

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,586 ✭✭✭sock puppet

I've got a wii and it suits me down to the ground. It was relatively cheap, I don't have a hd tv and I don't like playing games online. However I love multiplayer on games like mario kart and SSB.

Also even if the wii had been a massive failure Nintendo would have survived on the strength of the ds alone. I think they've sold 75 million units at this stage.

'proper games console' is a bit of an oxymoron, if you want to play games properly play on a pc. consoles are for fun with friends, not for gaming.

Oh please... If you want to have the hassle of upgrading your system every few months, waiting 10 - 20 minutes for games to install only to find out you need 7 more patches before its actually playable, then by all means PC is for gaming.

Consoles will always have 1 up over PC's when it comes to gaming IMO. Mouse & Keyboard isn't THAT special, and I'd much rather be able to crack open a few cans with mates around and have a laugh than watching constant error messages appearing while I'm playing a game.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,332 ✭✭✭valleyoftheunos

A few years ago it might have been a worth while suggestion tht PCs were leading the way over consoles but as ever it comes down to titles not specs. Consoles hae a bigger market share and because of this games will be developed for consoles rather than PC. What was the last big title to be a PC "exclusive". This is true in tech terms and control terms. I'd have any one of the the three manufactures control pads over Keyboard and mouse in a second.
