Ping G5 Driver and Pitching Wedge Question

    Hi Lads,

Just wondering can I have your thoughts on the Ping G5 Driver?? and also to tell you all that Mc Guirks are doing a “special” at the moment a Ping G5 driver for €199. I’m thinking of buying one, I hit one ages ago (I actually think it was the earlier addition of Ping G driver 2 or 3 or something) and liked it, overall isn’t it a pretty easy club to hit and a good buy??

Also my brother lost my pitching wedge! And now I’m on the look out to buying one but it’s easier said than done, all the specialist wedged are extremely lofted, more like a sand wedge or lobe wedge, what’s the story on pitching wedges. I don’t really want to order one from a set because it costs a fortune… any thoughts.

    Cheers

199 seems dear for the G5 - it has been superceded for a while now. I saw one for 169 in American Golf Tallaght today and i thought that was a bit dear.

Re: the pitching wedge, 47-06 individual wedges are commonplace, again I saw a few in American Golf. However you will find it hard to get a matched "PW" that is the same model as your irons eg if you have a set of Mizuno MP33s you'll get a 47 degree Mizuno easily but you'll find it hard to find a MP33 PW. Hope that makes sense.

Circa €199 for the G5 is about the going rate. Stores are just clearing out their last few. Unlike many brands, Ping rarely give a rebate on old stock so that's why you are unlikely to find anyone selling it for substantially less.

If you are prepared to spend €200, you are better off looking around for a lightly used G10 in the proper spec.

Cheers lads, I honestly thought €200 for a Ping G5 was really cheap, but than again Mc Guirks dont often do really cheap!

IME McGuirks Blanchardstown is generally the cheapest Irish golf shop (although this won't be the case for every item in the shop)

Also, about a year ago I saw Ping G5s for 150 in McGuirk's Howth. However they were 7.5 degrees with a regular flex shaft which would not be a popular loft/shaft combination.

I just bought a second hand 10.5 degree offset Ping G5 driver for €50. Took it to the range and am hitting it a good 50-60 yards further than my old 12 degree driver. The offset seemed to keep it consistently straight as I usually fade my drives.

The driver itself looks brand new...I'd say was only used a handful of times. You should easily be able to get a perfect second hand one for about €70. Golf clubs don't get worse with use unless they are badly treated and in bad condition which you can tell from looking at them.

I got it from a guy who sells second hand clubs in town (Dublin). I'll give you his number in a private message if you'd like.
