Was in Argos in Athlone today and the have a wharfedale (possibly spelt incorrect) 250gb with hdmi out and upscaling ability for 120 euros. Its marked in their catelog for 199 euros but when typing in code it comes to 119.99.

That's a good price for a 250Gb recorder. The price sounds correct, Argos making easy money on the currency conversion as usual. (ie. £80 is equivalent to about €100, not €120)

doesnt look good if it only does mono sound, but havn't seen a harddisk recorder this cheap yet

whist the Argos blurg does state mono sound, I doubt a 1080i HDMI connection is transmitting mono sound

id agree with slave1 - even the cheapo dvd players that you can buy for spare change come with some sort of 5.1 output.

also - with sky now plugging their sky+ for 50 yo yos for new customers - could this be the some of the reason for dvd recorders plumeting in price. afterall - why spend good money on a dvd recorder when sky is selling their pvr for substantially less

i'd say the mono sound must be for the analog tuner, but it could also be for the mpeg2 encoder/recorder... Would mean any recordings/time shifting would be mono

Would this thing upscale the tv input, or just a dvd you put in it? and anyone know how good it would be at upscaling something like ntl digital signal?

i have an LG that is much the same spec. It wont upscale normal tv signal in my experience - i had it hooked up to chorus and the signal was as crap as it normally was.

Back in january, i bought one of these except it didnt have a hard drive. It was a record to disc only version. It was useless. It had a fault for starters.I would set it recording and it would stop recording randomly.I returned it and got a no hdmi phlips one thats excellent. The wharfedale did have hdmi though it was an absolutely hopeless upscaler.Sky looked horribly smeared when i tried upscaling it.Dvds looked terrible as well, a world away from the ps3 for upscaling.I wouldnt call it a bargain and wouldnt touch it with a bargepole myself

It's in their latest in store end of catalog/clearance brochure at €119 so it's not a pricing mistake.
