FRIDAY 10:30PM: It looks like The Dark Knight's Friday opening is even bigger than first thought, according to early numbers -- around $64M-$65M in North American gross from a record-setting wide release of 4,366 theaters. That includes the $18.5M in midnight-to-3AM shows from a smaller pool of 3,040 venues. Now Warner Bros is claiming the biggest midnight show ever (better than the $16.9M set by 2005's Star Wars Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith then playing in 2,915 venues), and the biggest single day ever (better than the $59.8M set by May 4, 2007's Spider-Man 3 in 4,252 venues, including midnight shows). The question for Saturday is whether Dark Knight goes up or down on Saturday -- and by how much either way. The Saturday number to beat is Spider-Man 3's $51.3M, which was down 14% from its Friday number. Interestingly, rival studios are hesitant to even venture a guess about the latest Batman installment's weekend total. That number to best is Spider-Man 3's $151M, including a take of $39.9M on Sunday. "Saturday business will tell the tale of where this is headed," one rival studio bigwig stressed to me. Said another, "The hard thing about this movie is you don't know if all the shows tonight are already sold out, so their number might not move much." But everyone at Warner Bros is elated by the mega-blockbuster's record-breaking debut.

    MORE
FRIDAY 5:30PM: Warner Bros sources tell me that The Dark Knight is opening to a humongous $60M today from a widest-ever release of 4,366 North American theaters. That's breathtaking box office gross, even for a mega-blockbuster! So the studio is privately preening that this latest Batman installment has scored the biggest Friday ever, beating Sony's previous record-setter Spider-Man 3 with $59.8M scored on Friday, May 4th, 2007. What also makes this number so stunning is that the Chris Nolan-directed DC Comics dark drama starring Christian Bale and the late Heath Ledger is not as kid friendly as the comic book caper starring the Marvel webbed hero. Meanwhile, despite all the sell-outs this weekend, seats for The Dark Knight are selling at the astounding rate of 15 tickets per second at big movie ticket service Fandango.com. Clearly the great word of mouth is spreading as well as the rave reviews: 90% positive among cream of the crop critics on RottenTomatoes.com. So far, the only breakdown available for Friday's box office is a record $18.5M from 12:01 AM showings, including a best-ever $640K for ZIMAX midnight previews.

Meanwhile, Universal sources tell me that the studio's very early numbers for the 2,976 theaters opening Mamma Mia! made around $9M Friday and is on target to take in $25+M for the entire weekend.

DARK KNIGHT slays Spidey with a record $66M opening day, and it will soar past ‘Spider-Man 3’ for $157M and the all-time best opening weekend; ‘Mamma Mia’ also strong; Hollywood's Top 12 could hit $250M for biggest weekend ever!
    by Steve Mason

FRIDAY 9:00 p.m. (Pacific): Christopher Nolan’s long-awaited The Dark Knight (Warner Bros), fueled by thrilling IMAX sequences, a brilliantly conceived script and a diabolically skilled performance by the late Heath Ledger, is on its way to shattering records. Lots of them.

Starting with Thursday night’s 12:01a screenings coast-to-coast, which generated an estimated $18.4M by dawn, and continuing through packed matinee and evening showings, The Dark Knight has delivered a staggering $66M on its opening day.

    ALL-TIME BEST OPENING DAYS
    1. The Dark Knight - $66M (estimate)
    2. Spider-Man 3 - $59.84M
    3. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest - $55.83M
    4. Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith - $50.01M
    5. X-Men: The Last Stand - $45.1M
    6. Harry Potter & The Order of the Phoenix - $44.23M
    7. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End - $42.9M
    8. Spider-Man 2 - $40.44M
    9. Harry Potter & the Goblet of Fire - $40.11M
    10. Spider-Man - $39.4M

I published a 3-day estimate of $153M at 4:00 p.m, but I am now projecting that The Dark Knight is on pace for $157M, which will top Spidey 3's opening frame of $151.11M. Keep in mind that when the numbers get this big, the percentages get very small. At $153M, the new Batman would set the record by a margin of less than 4% over SM3. The weekend performance could go something like this: $66M Friday, $54M Saturday and $37M on Sunday.

My hunch is that The Dark Knight will, after all is said and done, be the #1 movie of 2008, chasing down both Iron Man and Indiana Jones & The Kingdom of The Crystal Skull, both from Paramount. I think this movie will play and play and play.

I also believe that if Academy Awards voters are interested in keeping their show relevant, they would do well to recognize not just Heath Ledger, who deserves to win Best Supporting Actor for what I think is a landmark performance, but also nominate The Dark Knight for Best Picture. All 5 Best Picture nominees should not be small independent films. The Dark Knight is more than just a superhero movie. It is a gritty, twisted, crime drama with an outstanding script, an unsettling theme, spectacular set pieces, and it represents the work of a genius director who pulls it all together with technical virtuosity.

The other major story for Hollywood is that The Dark Knight will successfully lift the film industry to its biggest 3-day weekend in history. I am estimating that when all of the actuals come in on Monday, the top 12 films will have delivered a staggering $250M. That number will crush the previous 3-day best of $209.88 (again the top 12 films) set July 7-9 of 2006. That was opening weekend for Pirates 2 ($135M), the 2nd weekend of Superman Returns ($21.8M) and the 2nd 3-day for The Devil Wears Prada ($15M).

In fact, if the projected number of $250M holds, this weekend will be bigger than the top 12 for any 4-day Memorial Day weekend in history. That is great news for the industry, which seems to be benefiting from a down economy and the number of families who are choosing not to travel. I am already tired of hearing the term “staycation,” but the outrageous price of gas does seem to be keeping people at home and spending their entertainment dollars at the local multiplex.

Mamma Mia (Universal), the ABBA-inspired musical starring Meryl Streep, has done its part in making this a record-breaking weekend for the movie business. The movie opened in the shadow of The Dark Knight, but still danced its way to an estimated $10.5M on Friday, which should translate to $27.5M. This well-reviewed, feel-good chick flick should reach $100M domestic with relative ease.

Well no, it's not out yet so they wouldn't publish the review. The reviewers will have seen it though - the media screening was on Tuesday.

comic action thriller flick oscar really?

yep, I thought all the oscar talk was over hype but it is that good. Ledger is just genius in it - the character he created is so far above and beyond any other comic book based villain. Depp got his first oscar nom for a comdey/action piece based on a disney park ride and this film is a million times better.

Not surprised about the ticket returns, the cinema nearest me had around 20 screenings from 12.01 to 6am and everyone was sold out and looking at fandango they have 32 screenings of it today and tomorrow and alot of them are already sold out.

Batman film The Dark Knight has set a single-day box office record by taking $66.4m (£33.2m) on its opening night, distributor Warner Bros has said.

The movie, which debuted in the US on Friday, has surpassed the previous record of $59.8m (£29.9m) set last year by Spider-Man, the studio said.

Directed by Christopher Nolan and starring Christian Bale as Batman, it cost $185m (£92.5m) to make.

Its pretty insignificant compared to GTA4 - that took 310 million in it's first day

TDK is only out in the U.S and a few other places.

GTA 4 was a unified worldwide release.

Games cost 5 times more than cinema tickets generally.

And everyone knows that game industry is bigger than the film industry so it's unfair to compare!

I wouldn't get too excited mind, if you go in with huge expectations you are likely to be dissapointed, just treat it like a regular trip to the cinema

but a video game has one release - with movies you get to have the cinema release and then x amount of time later you get to do it all again with the DVD release, the studio will also make a money for years to come selling tv rights so GTA4 has to make its money now cus its got a limited shelf life.

'Dark Knight' sets weekend record with $155.34M

'Dark Knight' sets weekend record with $155.34M

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- A Warner Bros. executive says the Batman sequel "The Dark Knight" has taken in $155.34 million to top "Spider-Man 3" for best opening weekend ever at the box office.

The figures released Sunday show "The Dark Knight" more than $4 million ahead of the $151.1 million first weekend for "Spider-Man 3" in May 2007.

Studio distribution chief Dan Fellman says "The Dark Knight" also broke the "Spider-Man 3" record for best debut in IMAX large-screen theaters with $6.2 million. "Spider-Man 3" opened with $4.7 million in IMAX cinemas.

    Thoughts?

    simple maths

310 000 000 divided by 60 (average price of xbox game) = 5166666 games bought

66 400 000 divided by 10 (average price of cinema ticket) =6640000 tickets purchased

People snapping up regular and IMAX tickets on Ebay for greater than face value
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - It seems that 4,366 theaters weren't quite enough.

As hype for new box office champ "The Dark Knight" reached a fever pitch over the weekend, moviegoers were surfing eBay and Craigslist for tickets, sometimes paying five times face value for them.

The hottest items were tickets to Imax showings. The movie opened on 94 Imax screens, and company executives did a good job letting folks know that director Christopher Nolan shot many of the biggest action scenes with an Imax camera, making it was the best venue for viewing the film.

All the publicity didn't hurt Imax stock, either: It gained 18 percent last week. "The Dark Knight," meanwhile set a new weekend record by selling $155 million worth of tickets.

The going online-auction price for an Imax "Dark Knight" ticket seemed to be around $50 -- with many sellers asking $60 and many buyers offering $40.

An eBay spokesperson said she didn't recall seeing this many, if any, offers to buy and sell movie tickets on the site before.

Went to see Dark knight again last night. Knew every show was selling out a couple of hours in advance at pretty much every cinema in NY so booked online in the morning then went off and enjoyed my day. Showed up 40 mins before the film is about to start - signs everywhere saying the show is sold out [8pm screening] as well as the 7.30 show and next 2 screenings after 8 so only tickets left for midnight show. In the line to collect ticket from machine and the guy in front of me is going nuts cus he wants to see Dark Knight but showed up 10 mins before the 7.30 show and can't get tickets for it or the 8 show. He goes off to yell at near by cinema staff [who give him a great "are you F-ing kidding?" look] While he is off being an idiot, girlfriend buys two tickets to Sex and the City. Roared laughing when I saw and they were ahead of me going up the stairs and she was all happy and skipping and he looked so miserable.

I booked my Thursday tickets for the Big Fella last week and I cannot bloody wait! Watched Begins again on Saturday and finished watching it again just now. I was doing a lot of reading on TDK (interviews etc) over the weekend and followed a youtube link to a news report from Hollywood on the opening night. I then out of habit stupidly scrolled down without thinking and some assh0le posted a major fcuking spoiler on the top comment. It really píssed me off, just cause this dick had seen it and he felt he had to tell everyone about it:mad: Ah well, roll on Thusday night!
