Saw a cop in Chicago on one recently. Looked good, except for the gallon sized bucket of coke in the cup holder. They'd need a shnack-box attachment here.

Looks like something out of Demolition man lol.

I'm all for alternative energy and all this and the other but if it makes the Garda response less effective or reducing their abilities then it would get a no vote from me.

A guard i know was telling me about the flexi-feul focus in his station. Becuase bio feul isnt available anywhere near so it takes petrol, catch is it drinks the stuff like its going out of fashion and its the most un-economical car in the station lol

the Mi Ev is a great car should come into the Irish market in its petrol version beginning of 2009 I would expect .

My business is selling electric cars and would make sense for the garda as they can be used to approach dealers without being noticed...

Apologies but my response was hardly commercial !all electric vehicles in general are silent and I thought it was worth mentionning in the context of this thread ...

Hardly spam is it, no company mentioned.

electric cars wont be of any use.. we can clock up 160k's in a night.. and thats hard driving.. an electric car wouldnt last p!ss!ng time.

as well as that .. a patrol car need to be available 24/7, it only takes a few min to top up with petrol/diesel.. how long to top up with electricity ??

well that is obviously a problem unless they are used for local patrols?

The cars will be able to clock 120 kms per charge from December onwards and fast charged fully in 2 hours .

there are talks of alternano batteries charged in ten minutes but it sounds dangerous and unrealistic to me .

    .

That 160k is done driving around and around housing estates etc, on my local patrol + a little bit of dual carriageway

Ok maybe I over-reacted a bit there * takes off cape*

What is the performance of an electric car except where you already told us about the 120km per charge.

Can they go from 0-60 in less than 10 seconds?

    What is the top speed?

    What is the durability like?

tbh I couldn't see an electric car being used for general patrol in the country stations. We regularly clock up 160-200km a shift patrolling our district with some very bad roads. Our car is always getting damaged too. We have a 07 mondeo which has been crashed/damaged about 10-11 times in its first year. Now its a total wreck and sitting in a garage waiting to be fixed or deemed a write off.

An electric car would be grand for the likes of community policing or for a summons server which are usually only found in the cities imo

the gardai have been fighting long enough, and are still fighting for purpose built patrol car's.. Electric car's would be a major step back

Even if they were only for warrant's etc.. They would end up being used for regular duties, as is the case with branch car's and drugs cars

'the gardai have been fighting long enough, and are still fighting for purpose built patrol car's.. Electric car's would be a major step back'

'Purpose built patrol car's' are a rarity anywhere in the world, the nearest being the US Crown Victoria / Impala

Even the UK uses fairly standard patrol cars wirh only a HD battery and gun box in them.

Electric scooters would be ideal for patrolling pedestrian streets AND ordinary streets when a turn of speed would be helpful ( Havn't seen many BikeCops catch a well ridden Courier bike or M/bike !! ), not to mention response times when city traffic has gridlocked ?

And as for those 'undercover' cars driving down Grafton St !!!!

In terms of performance it all depends of the mapping which can be changed and all the torque can be delivered instantly but then the range would suffer.

There are some videos on youtube showing the american wrightspeed absolutely flying by their ferrari and Porshe counterparts .

Our cars are always going to be small so I would imagine that they only fit the community patrolling requirements (at least for the 4 years to go.)

In the Uk they have released the Lightning which is 0-100 in 4 seconds and can be charged in ten minutes with Alternano batteries but it comes at a price 150 K . This shows that it is all possible but the cost has to come down.

The tricky thing for the manufacturers is to bring a car to the public which is affordable and yet meets their expectations/perceived requirements in terms of mileage and speed. The sports cars such as the Tesla and the Wrightspeed have loads of Li Ion cells attached to one another which makes them very expensive.

In terms of how resistant they are you would laugh if I would show you our little noddy car but they have solid dent proof ABS panels and a space stell frame chassis. They are not designed for high speed collision crashes . I presume that part of the requirement for a police also is to look quite serious , and there again our actual car would not fit the bill ...

My post is more to state from a technological aspect it will not be long until the police forces all around Europe will consider electric cars as a viable solution.

One aspect that I forgot to mention is the maintenance of these cars which is extremely low as they only have 100+ moving parts in comparison to over a 1000 for an ICE (internal combustion Engine)

Electric motors are bullit proof and will outlive the car , what would be interesting is at this development stage is to have a purpose built electric car which could cope with all the strain that garda cars are presently inflicted with .

BMW, Volvo and some other manufacturers make police spec cars,

They come complete with POLICE markings, Lights, Sirens, Baton Holders, and some other equipment that is alien to the Gardai.

I have a feeling SAAB make police cars as well, but i may be wrong.. i am probably thinking of the SAAB's that the Gardai purchased a while back
