Smoke Damage on new washing machine

I bought a new washing machine that was on sale (1/3 off) because the premises have suffered a fire and there was some smoke damage on some of the appliances. The machine shows not other sign of damage than black dust on the outside of it. I was talking to an electrician and he said he heard that any appliances with a motor which suffer smoke damage should be thrown out and not sold. Does anyone know if there is any thruth to this? Does anyone know if the shop that sold these machine was legally entitled to do so? I still paid 400 euro for this machine so it's not like I got it free or anything. I'm thinking if anything goes wrong and I try and get the machine repaired, will the manufacturer laugh in my face? Any advice on this anyone?
    Thanks a mil
