So I got myself a good deal on a refurbished mac mini and have it hooked up to the lcd tv. I want to save all my dvd's to a hard drive and play them through Frontrow.

What is the best way to do this? divx? i'm having trouble playing mpg's even with quicktime pro and the mpg patch, no sound!

To play divx in Quicktime you'll need to install Perian.

Front Row needs movies in quicktime format (MP4 M4V).
Download a free program called Handbrake, rip your movies to your hard disk using the Apple TV preset and then import them into movies in iTunes. Select one, press Apple+I and go to the artwork tab and drag over the dvd cover image from amazon or albumart.org. Each DVD will end up about 2.5Gb so you won't be long running out of space on your mini. You can either upgrade the hard disk or get an external drive and in Preferences in iTunes change the music folder location to the ext drive.
Watch the audio settings in handbrake and make sure you select the best audio. The line out jack on the mini doubles as an optical out giving you 5.1 as opposed to stereo by the way.
VLC player, also free, lets you play most video formats on the Mac, including WMV
You can also copy other movies (avi's for example) into your movies folder which is at: Users, Name, Music, iTunes, iTunes Music, Movies and they will show in the movies folder in frontrow albeit without artwork or coverflow. You can also put an alias (shortcut) there pointing to another folder of movies.

    Thanks for that!

I'll give it a go later.
