iPhone 3G and GPS functionality

Alright, I bought the iPhone 3G. It's cool, BUT I have some concerns regarding the GPS functionality. Currently I'm in Waterford, in city centre the GPS seems to work fine, but a couple of streets away from city centre iPhone shows my location somewhere in... Malaysia!!! Even in the middle of a large People's Park in Waterford, I'm still in Malaysia...

    Any ideas?

Weirdness.. I only bought mine today, so I haven't had much time to play around with the GPS, but it was dead-on accurae for me.

The iPhone3G uses three methods to obtain your location:
    • WLAN Hotspot's (SkyHook Wireless database)
    • Cell Tower ID and Google's Tower-to-Location database.
    • A-GPS which IIRC, uses external data to help narrow down your location.
Im guessing, your phone for some reason failed to get a GPS lock.. and is falling back onto one of the other two methods, and placing you in the wrong place altogether.

GPS needs sight of the sky - are you trying to get a fix indoors?

I'm guessing you are using the cell location function of the iphone, unfortunately in Ireland some cells aren't configured right and give your location in weird places.

In stillorgan it says I'm in malaysia, if only!!! :D

Of course I was trying outdoors, even without any high buildings or trees around. As I can see, I'm not the only one with this problem. This would mean that we can forget similar GPS functionality this the one of Nokia N95? :( I'm wondering why? Both devices support A-GPS...

Well. Thats about as useful as an ashtray on a motorbike. Surely it should be able to get your location using one of the methods. Other phones with A-gps can.

Mine is spot on, or thereabouts. Indoors and outdoors. In Limerick.

No problems here either. By the way I'm posting from my new iPhone :)

While I think it's a bit Big Brother-ish I have to say the blue dot following my progress into town on the bus last night was pretty cool. I'd say it's about 5 seconds behind.

The GPS on my N95 isn't great either. I have to stand in the same spot for 5 - 10 minutes to get a correct lock.
