I doubt it, dont think its planned to be released in the Republic any time soon! I think its designed to pick up freeview channels! But I could be wrong!

Play TV will only pick up freeview channels

It wont work with cable, only DTT. If it is MPEG4 compatible then it will work on DTT in this country.

Are we talking about that God awful show that's on TV3 at night time??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,905 ✭✭✭bucks73

Hogan08 probably is but the rest of us are not. There is an accessory for the PS3 called Play TV which is basically a digital terrestrial tuner that allows the PS3 to act as a DVR. Got one myself last week and the picture and sound are excellent. Pausing live TV works but scheduled recordings dont work yet due to a file format error. A PS3 firmware update will hopefully sort this soon.

But what staitions are you getting bucks? Is it still just the RTE ones they were testing?

Yeah, what channels are you able to get? And where did you buy it if you don't mind me asking

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,905 ✭✭✭bucks73

Its for terrestrial channels only so RTE1, RTE2, TV3 and TG4 (with digital teletext). Also you get the four radio channels Radio 1, 2FM, Lyric and RnG.

You connect the coax from your roof/attic aerial into the tuner and connect the USB into the PS3. Im using a normal aerial thats been in my attic for a few years but it may depend on your location as to what you need to receive the signal. Also, these are just trials at the moment so you may get the odd downtime or lack of EPG data.

For all the technical info you are better off having a look at the Terrestrial Forum and there is also a dedicated thread in there for the PS3 Play TV.

Bought it in Argos for €85. Bit pricey seeing as its GBP39.99 in Argos UK. They were sold out in Game in Limerick so dont know how much they cost there. Idiot in Gamestop said they werent out in Ireland yet. :D

ah right. My telly can pick up those channels as it is. I was hoping for E4 and Dave and the like. Fair enough then, cheers anyway

It is a tax on idiocy. Call in and you deserve to be fleeced. Why this is on this thread is a mystery to me.

Well I think you answered your own question there.;)

On a side note I find it fascinating watching the presenters on these shows trying to fill the time. :)

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but, hey wait a minute, did you actually read any of this thread? If you had you might notice this has nothing to do with 'game shows'.

You realise that this thread is about a Playstation accessory and not actually about the TV3 gameshow?

What's that. Going off topic about some bull**** game show that only idiots call in to? How rude indeed.

Last night the game was to re-assemble the number 3895 made up using match sticks. Re-assemble by only moving two sticks to get the highest possible number. I spotted that the number was probably 78951 by taking two sticks from the 3. I phoned in once but didn't get through. The presenter said it was really easy and there were many more games to follow. The number that I had thought of was called in several times and was turned down so I waited to the end of the show at 3am, the entire length of the show and she revealed from the envelope for about 1 sec the number 151321 which to me is an impossible solution. Watch if your entertained but I suggest not phoning in or just once if you think you may have it but they seem to be allowed to have an impossible solution that is not explained. Similar games have similar results

    Yes, yes, how entertaining, indeed.
Now, back on topic, anybody heard anything more about DTT in Ireland? Like what channels we will get after they finish testing etc? I'm paying a fortune at the minute (well €45 a month, but I could get so much off the psn with that!) for my NTL DVR and was thinking of getting a play tv for the ps3. But it would only be worthwhile if we were going to get decent channels I suppose.

You will definately receive RTÉ One, Two, TV3, TG4 and perhaps in the near future an Irish film channel and another channel showing proceedings from the Dáil. I wouldn't go cancelling UPC just yet. You can see more information over on the Terrestrial board.

I've only just used this site for the first time today and this forum was the one that came up when I searched for Play TV - a topic that needs circulating. Maybe I should have started my own forum but for the moment I don't know how to do this.

Be careful about posting anything anywhere on boards about that "game show" it might earn you a prison sentence! cell block H

Edit - Welcome to boards.ie btw! Have fun and don't feed the trolls.

Just in case anyone didn't hear, Play TV has been updated and now allows recording and playback of the Irish stations.

Cheers for the news man. It's my only tv source apart from youtube and RTE's online player and 4od. Now I can record stuff. YAY.

Any other new features in the update?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,905 ✭✭✭bucks73

Nothing really that affects us in Ireland. Unless you get a Sony Aino phone for remote play. The main details are:

    Support for Australian digital TV
Watch, pause and record high definition TV
    Multichannel audio playback
    Improved remote play usability
Support for mobile phone remote play
