considering a trip to rome for a week. most of the hotels are located 8-10 km from the city center along the ring road. is it very alkward to get to the city to see all the sites? would i be better booking in the centre of the city or are the outskirts fine?

There are hundreds of hotels in the centre of the city itself. Most are small family run joints but theres a few bigger ones too. Theres one called the Stargate hotel if I remember correctly.

Personally, I would hate to stay 8-10 kms from the city. I think you would spend a lot of time just commuting from A to B. Bear in mind that if you stay that far out, it isn't as easy to pop back to your hotel in the afternoon for a nap or a rest and then head back out again. Also if you stay in the city, you will save a fortune in taxi's and other forms of transport. Rome in general is a really easy city to walk around, so if you stay anywhere remotely central, you will be practically walking distance or at worst a short metro ride to all the sights.

Hotels in Rome ARE pretty pricey, we stayed in a place called the Hotel Caprice, now it was nothing fancy, but it was clean and comfortable and came with a great free breakfast. It was just off the Via Veneto, 2 min walk to the metro station, 5 mins to Spanish Steps and 10-15 mins from Trevi fountain. We found it great for what we wanted. We paid just over €100 per night last year.

I stayed here when I was in Rome: http://www.hotelquirinale.it/index.html

It was central, about a five min walk from the main train station. You can walk to the coluseum in about 15mins, its on Via Nationale which has a lot of shops and some fantastic churches (but you get a lot of them in Rome!).

Plenty of little restaurants around the hotel and the food there was good.

I would stay in Trastavere - fantastic area that i can't speak highly enough of! You can walk to all the attractions on the other side of the river but the area is really lively with great bars and restaurants and not tourist central..

I stayed here: http://www.astridhotelrome.it/ for a week last year, was over for the Irl v Italy rugby.
Lovely hotel, central enough, but quiet area at night.
