CFL/LED replacement for GU5.3/MR16 and nightlights

I've had a trawl through the various CFL/LED threads but still need a bit of advice if anyone can help.

I've 12v 40w and 50w Halogen MR16s(the pinned ones) in the hall, kitchen and a few bathrooms. I'd like to replace them with CFL/LED bulbs, preferably without replacing the fittings. Can anyone advise what would be best and where I might be able to get them.

Secondly, I'm using 15w BC Pygmy bulbs as nightlights in the kids bedrooms. I've been looking for a replacement CFL for years but have yet to find anything appropriate.

Lastly and completly non-energy saving. I've a string of outside lights which use 110v 15 or 25W ES/E27 bulbs. I'd like to replace some of these and I'd like clear bulbs if possible. I've not been able to find anyone in Ireland who can even source them. Anyone?

    OK first things first.

The best replacement for 50W 12V halogens IMO is an 11W CFL. Others will say that LEDs are better, but its a close race. So a Megaman 11W CFL pack will have a crappy fitting (recycle this if possible) it will have a lamp and a GU10 lamp holder.

You will need to remove the 12V traffos from the MR16 down lights and replace the MR16 lamp holder with the GU10 holder. This will not only reduce the wattage from 50W to 11 but it will also remove the hot lossy traffo from the equation

there will be MR16 LEDs lamps that will fit directly into the fitting see
    http://www.loweleds.com

but undimmed CFLs would be what I would use. (in my house i actually use 13W PL downlights) but there would be some work changing these.

Note CFL take a while to heat up, and you can't dim the standard ones.

    you might get away with
    www.cpc.co.uk for the other lamps

don't know if this is 110V or not, try calling them they are helpful.

www.avocalite.ie are good too, last time i bought the 15w BC Pygmy I got them from a UK site, I'll see if i can dig the name out.

    anyway

is a 220V Micro Spiral 9W Small Bayonet Cap B15 it might be too bright though

these are the lowest rated SBC lamps I have ever used at 7W, they state that they are as good as a 35W standard lamp, but they are not, but this could be to your advantage here

I'm assuming that you need a CFL at about 2W, and I don't know where to get them, but call Avocalite, they are in Ireland.

Hope this helps, put you on the right direction anyway.

    Stoner,

Thanks for taking the time with the details reply. I'll call a few of the companies mentioned and see what I can sort out.

I just bought some MR16 Leds from the UK and tried them but they don't work correctly. They emit very faint light. I checked the voltage and they are indeed 12v. Does anyone know why this is happening?

It works with the normal 12v mr16 halogens. I want to find a replacement LED that guarantees to work. Anyone know where in Ireland I can buy more than 10 at low prices?

    Thanks,

    Hisa

could be a compatibility prob with electronic trafos.they might need a 'regulated power supply'.

Try here http://www.futureled.ie/en/7-mr16-led-bulbs or http://loweledlighting.ie/lamps/led-lamps.html you might want to look at your traffos and make sure they are suitable.
