Does anyone know if it's possible to get a photography degree without doing a full time course (i.e. night or distance learning). Must be a recognised degree or diploma?

    thanks.

I've been looking at this one http://www.cmit.ie/courses-creative-distance-learning/diploma-in-photography-distance-learning-course.html?gclid=CNHJuqPByZQCFQ9KQgodX3-VmA
not sure how recognised or good it is...

    EDIT: looks a bit basic!

    That's like a FETAC qualification.

Portabello college in Dublin do a city and guilds diploma in Photography on part-time basis. My sister also did the course in Waterford and she found it very good.

I've started that CMIT course a few months ago. It's very basic reading but the tutors answers come back more in depth than what is in each section. Not sure what good it will do me but it's better to say I have a Diploma in photography (in some form) rather than just say it's a hobby.

i wish i'd done a photography qualification straight out of school instead of studying chemistry but in saying that, no publisher , no band, no client at all has ever asked me about my qualifications

Is it true though that there are as yet no recognised qualifications in digital photography alone?

Sorry to hijack but I just can't justify myself studying for film when I will never use it!

Tommy you dont need any qualifications :) a born natural...

Similar to Dotorg, I have never been asked about qualifications when quoting or completing jobs. They all want results !!

Thanks Keith don't know about that.

Anyway, I'm not too interested in the qualiification per se but I have a cunning little plan that it might just assist in :P:D

I did the City & Guilds course in Waterford it was very good. The only thing is that City & Guilds are changing the format of the Photography course next year. So keep an eye on the C&G website.

As for the course it was good 3 modules crammed into one year was a bit much I don't think it was my best work but I haven't got the results yet either, so fingers crossed.

Good luck Trish. Would prefer it crammed than drawn out to be honest.

Tbh, my FETAC Qualification isn't worth a thing.

My Fine Art degree will be a piece of paper.

But I've had 5 years experience in getting them, and that's what makes it worthwhile tbh.

This thread brought to mind this quote

" Do you know that there are more than 20,000 graduates with degrees in photography released EACH year in the U.S. alone by colleges/universities? Contrast that to the negative 100 or so staff jobs opening up each year (that's a total guess on my part) and you do the math... The freelance market is becoming incredibly over saturated..."

from here, its a long, but interesting piece, written by a former sport photographer for the NYTimes, worth a look if you are interested in a career in photography.

I don't really put much value on a degree as such ( though having said that I could learn a large amount no doubt).

Will it help get me work .. I'm pretty sure it won't.

I have a good job and to leave it for photography would be a huge step. As I said though, I have a cunning plan and reckon I could make the cost of the course back many times (everything working out of course).

Pure photography wise, I'd be much more amenable to informal, more focused learning.

So, any assistance with a formal Diploma/Degree course would be appreciated. The courses above, while interesting, don't really fit the bill.

@ Nihlg - I am a kinda fan of the Franz Bechenbauer theory - " I might not be the fastest from A to B, but who said you have to start from A "

You were probably in the same class as my sister Alicia. Did you have the instructor that was very destructive in his criticism the whole time.

how is Alicia... yes you tend to have to take things he says with a pinch of salt and move on swiftly. 'cause one week he could say your work is complete ****e the following week he might say it was a masterpiece there is no middle ground with him.

Alicia is grand. Photographing away. I got her a 70-500 zoom lens for her birthday in April. As far as I know she is using that a lot to take photos at Hook Head recently. I will be talking to her next weekend at a party at home in KK so I will tell her I was talking to you on line.
