Prioritising Work

I'm just wondering if anyone here has any tips for prioritising work and general time management - I have searched google but its a lot of dross really.

Reason why I'm posting is I've started a new job and its management orientated, as such there are tasks coming thick and fast. I'm finding it difficult to know where to begin or what to do first...I have my notepad of tasks but where to start is my biggest problem.

So...has anyone had a similar issues?

Sorry if this should be in the problems thread...its not a problem as such just looking for tips or tricks

I tend to write a list of jobs each morning and prioritise by number (1 being the most urgent/demanding) and work my way through the list. If someone asks for something else to be done just add it to the list. Don't deviate from the list unless it is absolutely necessary (like your manager is screaming for it) otherwise it defeats the purpose of a list if you drop everything as soon as your phone rings.

If something pops into your head that must be done again just add it to the list.

Also, work offline with your email and only go online every few hours. I try to read my mails in the morning, after lunch and before I go home.

the other factor important to consider is whether you can feasibly complete the tasks set within the timeframe given..

whilst I am not suggesting you don't push yourself, don't forget there is only one of you!.....in my experience it has always been better to be honest with your boss when it comes to deadlines and volumes of work and you shouldn;t be afraid to ask them to prioritise your work for you if you feel there simply won't be enough time to complete everything.

be clever in the way you ask of course - you don;t want to ask all the time - just when things are getting very full-on

Soon you will learn what needs to be prioritised and who needs to be kept happy....don't panic!

as per posts above the key is to not to continuously check e-mails / answer phone/ new tasks

you are new to management so don't be afraid to ask for advice !
