Weddings and Camera Body Rental

I've started doing a few weddings here and there, with the hope of doing a few more over the next year to keep me in pocket. I've been doing them with my girlfriend, which is great as we both have a very different eye and use different lenses etc to really broaden the range of shots we get. So far, the clients have been very happy with what we have done and so have we.

In any case, I'm pretty happy with the gear I have at the moment. The only thing I'm missing is a spare body, which is becoming maybe a necessity. I don't want to buy one, however, until I'm sure its worth it financially, and I'm wondering if its possible to rent bodies on a daily basis in Ireland.

    So... Is it?

It's possible to rent them, but at the end of the day, three weddings down the road, and you'd be able to afford the body anyways. Plus you'll have spent however much on gear, on top of buying the body.

If you're doing weddings, your clients are happy, and you've got more work lined up, it's worth it financially. Even if it means adding an extra few bob onto the next few bookings you take, just to make sure you've got enough to cover.

Renting the bodies is dead money. Save your €€'s and put it towards a good body. What gear do you have and what are you looking for?

What reason do you have to require another camera body, just curious ?

Just incase the first one stop working..
So you can if needed have a wide angle(say a 10-20) and a zoom (24-70)
Thats the only 2 reasons i have one

very risky shooting someone's dream day without a backup body, and really you need backup batteries, backup memory cards, extra flash, reflector etc. etc.
You need to be prepared for any eventuality.
so belt and braces is the way to go for a special event!!!

besides a fault with one camera, at times during a wedding or a quick paced event you just wont have time to change lens so you could miss that vital shot.

i did one last week and had three cameras going!!

Best off to get a camera that use the same as your main body(eg.5D,40D) just means you can have plenty of spares batteries and just grab them when you need them

Don't forget insurance (gear and professional).

renting from conns is about 10% the price of buying, so after 10 rentals, you've paid for the camera

Last seven or eight jobs I quoted for asked if I had insurance (I do on gear/public) so along with back-up gear this is a nessisity...

With Conns if you rent once and then buy the body they take the rental price off it so might be a good way to find out if you like the body

This is my Wedding kit (cleaned and lined up ready to go) :) all except for the 85mm f1.8...

Not a bad setup! Well because there is two of us, there is backups on a lot of stuff (two bodies, flashes, loads of cards, batteries, lenses etc) but having a third body between two might be an idea.

As for insurance, if you dont mind me asking, how much did that set you back and how did you sort it out?

Canon G9, great for little hi-res video on a table-top tripod during the speeches and ceremony :)

Insurance was €725 through Dolmen Insurance (Contact Gerry Doody) that was for gear/public liability/prof indemnity

There is a facility here in Ireland that is specifically being designed for togs and is endorsed through SWPP.

PM me if you want the details
