    Hi there,
I want to go home from work today and it has been a tough week for me. I suffer from depression and I having a hard time. I'm far from focused at work today.

There are a few things that need to be done at the apartment this evening and then I will drive back to the homeplace.

Do you have to be really physically ill to take a day off work do you think it's ok in a situation like me where my mental state is very fragile.

    Thanks.

I think take the day off if you're feeling depressed, I'm not a sick day taker but if your mentality id fragile take it

This is something I have had to do in the past. In a fair world you are FULLY and EQUALLY entitled to go home if you are unwell (mentally or otherwise) but there is still that huge stigma and the 'get on with it' attitude.

This may seem contradictory to the paragraph above BUT if you can stick it out I would say do it. It can become a habbit and the first sign of a 'down swing' I would go home. So I'd say only you know how bad it is and what to do. Judge it and you can always say you are physically ill if needs be?

    Feel better soon.

What does that mean, that you never get sick or you'd go into work even if you were feeling sick?

YOu only have a few hours to go,,if youre feeling very bad then go to your manager and explain but dont use the excuse of having to do stuff back at your place, explain youre diagnosed with depression. Like previous poster said, if you physcially unwell you wouln=dnt have a problem it would be best if you could stick it out as i doubt the manager would appreciate you asking to leave work early on a friday,,,sounds a bit too convenient in the workplace environment.

    You should go home.

Do you take a lot of sick days?

Depends on how well you get on with your boss.

Have you told them about your depression?

They might be understanding....but then again it is a Friday afternoon ...

I have people working for me - if a normally good worker came to me and said they were feeling under the weather, could they go home early - no problem at all. It's just a job and we're only human :)

I never take sick days tbh. hmmmm, so you reckon the Friday afternoon thing is really bad...

I hate havin' to go home sick.

Well if it's not something you're in a habbit of doing I say go do it. Nip it in the bud and do something constructive for the day. And do something FUN too! Obviously don't make it a regular thing so when you need to do it you'll be able to!

    Good luck!

If you never take sick days, I say got for it.

I have a fairly strong work ethic (or at least I think I do!) so normally I'm a bit tough when it comes to sickies and the like, but I reckon you are well within your rights to go home sick.

    Forget that it's Friday.

    Best of luck.

Yeah i guess i was just saying that to you to let OP know i feel guilty about it too.. but am always too guilty to call in sick Two sick days ever in ten years.

I guess that i was trying to say do it but normally i'm not a one to say "sure take the day off" willy nilly but if she is down then she should (hope that makes sense)

Just go home. Life is too short and you are going to get no thanks for saying in work when your feeling miserable. Loads of people pull sickies the whole time and they arent even really sick. You are. Go home and de stress.:)

    +1

my one worry would be that you would make a habit of it. I suffer from depression too and sometimes have really bad days/weeks where all i want to do is go home and crawl under the covers.

If you feel you wont make a habit of it then go home

    Hope you feel better soon

If you were dying with a cold or had broken a limb to go one further you wouldn't think twice about taking time off. Mental issues though less perceptible are just as debilitating and no less worthy of convalescence. Take some time off if you need to. One thing I would say, as someone who's been there, it can be better at times to keep going if you can at all to avoid slumping altogether. Only you can know if it would be better for you to curl up for a bit or struggle on but either way do not feel guilty about it. Look after yourself.

This is going to be the key part of how they react. If you have not told them already it may look a bit sus. However, if you have made them aware of your condition then it will come across as perfectly reaonable(well, it should).

sounds like you need a holiday rather than just a sick day, when did you last have time off?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 166,026 ✭✭✭✭LegacyUser

Right I did it anyway. I'm glad I did.

My life is a mess....I need a holiday too. Hopefully I can get through the next few weeks until I have my holidays.

Cheers for the good advice. I would have felt guilty about it only for someones advice here. Feeling guilty would have been no way to feel.

I think there's another girl at work that may be depressed and she's been off for the last 3 weeks sick at least.

Her job is easier to replace than mine but still I only took a half day.

Im interested to know if you told your employer that you suffer from depression, because no matter what people say there is a stigma attached to mental difficulties. It depends on the type of job or company you work for as to how these days are dealt with.

Of course if you have told your employer and there are future difficulties as a result, they cannot discriminate against you in the workplace because of this....legally

So really what im saying is, id probably tell my employer, and if they are decent and your not taking the piss with sick days, they will be understanding.

Depression is a serious illness and does merit a day off if you need it

Zombie thread closed. Sligo 2008, you're new here so you get one warning. read the charter of this forum before posting again or you will be banned. Excessive smileys, utter nonsense and scattergun posting are not tolerated.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.
