I just saw a review for the new batman film and they highly recommended seeing it in a IMAX screen.

So does cineworld in Parnell St. still have an IMAX screen and will they be showing The Dark Knight on it?

    Thanks

    Tok

No they do not. There aren't any Imax screens in Ireland to my knowledge.

When Cineworld / Virgin Cinemas was refurnished a few years ago, they added a couple of extra regular screens (like the big screen 17) where IMAX theatre used to be.

I'll be watching Dark Knight at London IMAX - a 0230hrs showing :)

We had one in Dublin years ago but nobody supported it.
    Bloody disgrace.

They only showed Imax films though. Documentarys etc. Thats why it failed.

There's only so many times you can watch a film about the Grand Canyon.

It would probably do a bit better in this day and age when actual proper films are released in the iMax format.

Me too! But at the slightly more Godly hour of 23.30. Good god, I can't wait :D

This movie would've have been a perfect excuse to utilise IMAX in Ireland. I suppose when it first came out there wasn't many movies that were perfect for it. It's only really been in the past year or two that people & businesses are getting more interested in IMAX.

Bah, I'm gonna be forced to watch The Dark Knight in the crappy Sligo cinema. Fine-sized screens but piss-weak treble-high sound speakers. Meh, who knows, I'll probably convince the rest of the lads to see it in a real cinema and I'll tag along for a second viewing.

Same as Duggy.. got tickets to premiere in Dublin on Tuesday but can't go!

Instead I'm going to the Gaiety on Thursday night instead - there's a 7 and 9.40 showing! :(

And knowing the Gaiety, it'll be in a shíte screen too!

23.30 had no nice seats left :(

Only the 02.30 and 05.30 showings had decent ones (barely).

Well, bascially a bigger screen with better resolution. And some IMAX films are in 3-D. I'm sure there's a more complicated explanation to it tho.

    Some IMAX films: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_IMAX_films#2000s

There's no IMAX screen in the Republic but there is one in Belfast. Unfortunately they're in the middle of refurbishing so are closed down and they didn't reply to my e-mail so I dunno whether they'll be open for Dark Knight screenings.(stupid time for refurbishments, imagine all the business they'll lose iif they aren't re-open)

I'm also going to London to see it but not on the opening weekend, it'd all be far too manic. Gonna go in August to coincide with that Movie-Con the BFI are running in conjunction with Empire magazine. It shall be the geekiest weekend of my life, oh yes it shall!

Don't forget the Doctor Who exhibition will still be running.

Yep, I believe I will be suction-cupped to the screen while watching it. However, I have sod all patience!

Just out of curiosity, does sitting close to the screen (i.e. 2nd row) significantly impact on viewing experience in an IMAX theatre to the same extent as in a normal cinema?

GOOD GOD YES.... do not sit close to the IMAX Screen, it is 100 times worse than sitting at the front in a regular cinema. I went to see The Matrix Reloaded in the IMAX and ended up with seats on the front row, I had the worst case of neck ache after it from having my neck tilted back and having to look left and right consistently to see what was going on screen. Plus at that distance everything looks distorted as everythings stretching away from you.

Unlike normal cinemas which have the best seats in the middle in the middle, the best ones for IMAX screens is middle in the back. The back row is usually completely level with the center of the screen.

so on imax does it show the actions bits full screen then pop back to regular widescreen for the drama parts or is it just the bank job thats on imax?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,836 ✭✭✭Vokes

Yeh, there is something like 6 action sequences (incl the start) that expand vertically to fill up the whole screen.

Going to New York on Sunday so definitely catching this while i'm over there!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,899 ✭✭✭grimm2005

im off to chicago next week (great timing!) so will certainly be catching it at the navy pier imax. Whats the story when they say they've filmed six scenes with imax cameras? is it in 3D or what? and is the rest of the film exactly the same as a regular cinema? or is the whole film higher res (like the diff between dvd and blu ray)?

We have an imax here but Batman doesn't appear to be listed:( Maybe they'll pick it up soon?

And, unfortunately for me, i ended up in the second row in the normal theatre and it was really hard to focus on the screen, it really is distorted, even more so if you're not sitting dead centre.

i've seen it twice now in the IMAX in san francisco, unreal..

for the movie its shown with "black bars" and then when its one of the imax scenes, the screen is filled vertically... it looks unbelievable. the hong kong scene is amazing... absolutely amazing
