The developer has abandoned plans to buy out the members of Clontarf and relocate them to Portmarnock.

I wonder how many of the members had already started spending their windfall?

probably none, because in reality they never had the power to sell it. Dublin City Council own most of the land. It was a big fuss about something that realistically didnt have the legs to stand on. I feel sorry for all the members that were mislead into believing that they could possibly get thousands of euro and move to a top class golf course

Bad news for the members, good news for golf.

It was always assumed that this wouldn't happen since the golf club only own about 12%of the land the club is on. The council own the rest.

Good to hear. It always struck me as opting for absolute greed over common sense or any other kind of clear thinking.

But the move to Portmarnock Links was probably a good one as Clontarf has become dated and lacks practice facilities.

Possibly, although Clontarf is a fairly unique course in that it is so close to the city centre. It's got a fair bit of history behind it and it would've been a shame to see it go for all golfers.

As for practice facilities, they have a chipping green, a putting green and an area in which you can hit a few irons. If they need anything more than that then there's a driving range not far up the road.

where is there a driving range nearby?

I agree, it's a very greedy thing to do, and courses that close to the city are important
