I have an AVI file that I want to burn and play in a dvd player.
I don't have any DVDs and no decent software on my laptop. Is there any software that can burn AVIs to a CD? Is it even possible?

    Nero can do it.

Any data burning software can burn an AVI to CD/DVD. What you need to know first though is whether your DVD player is capable of playing AVI's from data discs. It may on;y play VCD/DVD format discs. What DVD player do you have?

I don't think it will play data disks, i tried before. Its old.

    Does your player support vcd/svcd?

Well then you'll have to convert the AVI accordingly, it should play VCD's anyway. Google is your friend here, but I'm pretty sure Nero can do this fairly painlessly.

ahhh i remember the days of having no dvd burner or tv out on the pc and converting all avi dl's and dvd rips to svcd using dvd2svcd with cinecraft encoder on a 3 pass vbr encode that took on average 8 hours

lucky for you there are more powerfull pc's these days OP,

To be honest ur better off waiting and getting a blank dvd for 50c at most,
I actually only the other day used windows dvd maker in vista to put an avi on dvd and was actually surprised by the result and speed , if you have vista its already there on the laptop, there are much bigger and brighter apps to be found though.

I never convert these days so im out of touch with hwats out there but in a jam this really did a nice job on some avi's from a digitial camera for me to show to family.

Is videohelp.com still there dishing out guides for conversions????
/checks ..... it is , have a look there OP!!!!

Ah yes, those were the days :)*sheds single tear*
Bet you used Flask back in the day to encode to DivX ;-) 3.11 alpha too

Anyway, you could use free tools like Super to encode to mpeg1 and then use really any cd buring tool to burn a vcd disc. Nero demo will do just perfect here.

    NB
You can fit 800mb onto a 700mb cdr because S/VCDs use what is known as Mode 2/XA format. Error correction is built into the standard. The error correction cds use (100mb) can then be used for video. (2324 bytes of data, no ECC)
