Where is the grub loader located?

    I have a pc with linux mint and vista ultimate running on two seperate drives.
    I want to re-install vista. Is the grub loader normally installed on the same drive/partition
    that the linux install is on? Can I just disconnect the drive with Mint installed before I
    re-install windows and re-connect it afterwards with grub intact.
    If anyone can help it would be appreciated or if anyone knows a better way to go about
    this let me know. Thanks

    Ok, Ive been doing some hunting and found that the grub is in the mbr which may get
    changed by the new install. Ive read I can modify the grub via a terminal off a live cd after
    the install. Everything is backed up so here goes.

    Depends on the distro. I know openSUSE and Ubuntu let you specify where to install it (MBR or a certain partition).

    You can reinstall it fairly easily using the config files in /boot/grub if all goes pear-shaped.

    This is simple and handy for restoring GRUB as your bootloader if it's been overwritten:

    Just put in the Live CD and start up the terminal.

    Thanks for the help guys. I was trying this ^^ but would not work for me. I googled about
    and it works for a lot of peeps but just kept booting into windows on me. I used Super Grub Disk http://www.supergrubdisk.org/wiki/Main_Page and it worked fine. Great little tool. 4mb iso
