Talk Some Sense Into Me...

Was studying for my VCP this week & was a bit stressed, so I bought a Canon 580EX II to cheer myself up.
Sat the exam today & passed it, but now I have the urge to celebrate with another purchase.
I'm seriously considering the Canon 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM.
Shouldn't really be spending that kind of money this month & the car needs to be taxed next month. Can someone please talk some sense into me!

We should have a support group for gear addicts, to help talk each other out of impulse buys. :D

Buy It. If you have the artistic insperation right now for such an excellent wide angle zoom lense, then i wouldn't ignore that. ;)

Not what you want to hear I know, but I impulse bought a Nikon D300 last week and its the best thing I ever did.

Just buy it, sure you'll have at least a month before you get any hassle for the car tax!:D

    Hi OP
... I have been tempted to buy that lens lately as well ..
    but as i already have a 24-70 L f2.8 .. i don't see the justice in spending almost
    €1000 for 8mm !!!

but if you don't have a 24-70 f2.8 .. id go for it .. I wish Canon would bring
out an L lens in the 10-24 range !! :)

I was really looking at the 16-35mm f/2.8 II lens also, but decided that I don't need it right now. It's something that is expensive, but it wouldn't be used enough to justify it now.

    So, I'm holding out.

You already have a good selection of lenses, and as you say, there are other things you need the money for right now.

One of the worst lenses ever.
    Waste of money...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,547 ✭✭✭City-Exile

I'd never get enough use out of the 10mm.
It's just over €1k if I buy it on eBay & a little less, if I wait & go to NY.
Then I'll need at least one filter as well (82mm) as I have none that size.

    Thanks Paulw & sasar. :D

The only way to cure this is too buy more L lenses your flash might need some company too

Remind me to never ask ricky91t for advice! :D

So who else has bought on impulse recently?

You have the 17-35 too? Too much money for the 16-35, I went for the 17-40L and that is excellent.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,263 ✭✭✭✭Borderfox

I was thinking of either pocketwizards (might be a go) or a 15mm f2.8 fisheye.... :)

Yeah, that's what I was saying above.
I have no filters that size.

I have the 16/35mm lens and while it is a most excellent lens I've been finding it hard to buy filters for it. I only have a B+W Circular Polariser I'm on the look out for a ND filter or a Graduated Filter. So since you're in the mood to spend money why don't you buy those for me. :D

I'm thinking of investing in Colkin P size filters to solve this problem

The idea was to stop me from spending money, not stop me from spending money on myself & spend it on someone else instead! :p

Not that I'm one to talk since a 580 is coming my way (shortly after to be followed by pocket wizards and a second speedlite when I know a bit more about the flash stuff I want to do) (but anyway).

If you want the 16-35 2.8 what exactly do you want it for? Can you think of any pictures you took lately that would have been 10,000 times better if you'd had that lens, or are there pictures that you would have taken only if and ONLY IF you had that one lens tacked to the front of your camera?

I mean, I covet a 24-70L but I happen to have the range covered and after that, it's icing. and I'm off sugar.

Me, I've planned the photographs that will be taken with the 580...

but someone told me today I was "sensible" and I'm still in shock over it all.

How much bigger is the 580 EX II then the 430 EX II?
I want the smaller 430 EX II but it's not in until the beginning of August and I'm heading of to a mammoth music fest on the 7th.
I def would prefer the smaller size and yes I do know that the 580II has many extra features but the 430II would do what I want it for and it's the small size I want, but at this stage not hearing anything about the 430II I'm getting tempted by the 580II

a few other items on my wish list is
a battery pack - nearly been caught a few times with not so quick recycling
set of filters (too many to count)
    portable studio lights
    more memory cards
    Canon EF 85mm f/1.2 L II or a EF 50mm f/1.2 L

On a separate note, I've just been on URGalaxy's eBay page & they've got a serious lack of Canon gear. It's like they're going out of business!

    They'll be missed! :(
