    Here one for ya's.

Bands that kept the same line up throughout their career.

The rules are the band must have released ALL MATERIAL with this line up singles, EPs and albums.

    I'll go first:

    The Beatles.
    The Pixies.

Even Jesus had a line up change in his band "The Apostles", with Matthies replacing Judas after he betrayed Jesus to the Romans.........there was also talk of musical differences.

Manic Street Preachers never replace Richey and carried on as a 3 piece

Ringo Starr doesn't appear on some of the very earliest Beatles recordings, a session drummer was used after Pete Best was fired and Ringo wasn't yet trusted enough to play on the songs.

    Good stuff Amazo.
I had a sneaky feeling but wikipedia coughed up nothing.

"Ringo the best drummer in the world?!?
Ringo isn't even the best drummer in The Beatles!!!"
    John Lennon.......
.........(the best thing he even said).

Don't know if it's widely known, but Paul McCartney is a very good drummer. He plays drums on one or two of their later songs.

    An obvious one but U2?

On a similar note, and not widely known, according to a drunk roadie I met in town, adam Clayton sometimes doesn't play the bass live. Instead handing the playing over to a musician behind the curtain while he stands there.

    He's supposedly cack alley!

the manics have said in the past that the keyboard player Nick was officially in the band but couldnt announce it cus their hardcore fans would disapprove!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 482 ✭✭Death or Glory

exactly, it's the fans opinion that count, and we'll never see him as a member of the band!

    Good keyboardist though!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,478 ✭✭✭Bubs101

Aren't REM like the Manics in that they have had the same line-up since day one bar the musician who left and they never replaced?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,114 ✭✭✭noby

    The Fall.

    Oh, wait. Wrong thread.

REM are very much like the preachers in that they have a long-term guitarist who isn't 'officially' in the band.

I'm gonna have to say thats still a line up change.
On the their latest cd's where it used to say "Guitar:______" etc etc etc, it doesn't anymore, so its a change.

New Order (apart from a slight hiccup with their previous incarnation)
    Queen
    Ride
    Led Zeppelin
    Radiohead

Wrong - they've reunited with someone else guesting on vocals and the bass player from Blue Oyster Cult.

ZZ Top have the longest running same line-up as far as I know. Nearly 40 years with the same three members.

Talking Heads, although Jerry Harrison wasn't part of the original lineup, but he did join before any records were released.

Damn got there with ZZ Top before me,

Also agree with the above manic street preachers statements, one of my all time fave bands by the way...

    Coldplay
    Rage Against the Machine
    Blur
    The Doors

blur hasnt kept the same lineup for every album, or at least as far as i know, this one is the first one since thinktank i believe with the originals, i usually mix up album names though so i may be wrong

God, this is actually kind of hard. Its amazing how many bands change or lose at least one member during their careers.

    Anyway,

The Smiths (even though they only lasted about 5 years)
    Super Furry Animals
The White Stripes (well, there's only two of them)

What's the limit on how long a band has to be going for? I could name countless bands who have released one album with the exact same line up. :P

    Supergrass: added a keyboard player

The Doors had Ian Astbury playing with them.

    The Police,
    The Jam,
    Aerosmith?

The White Stripes (well, there's only two of them)
:P That's what popped into my head too!

This is a tough one actually: I thought Sonic Youth always had the same lineup but Wikipedia has told me otherwise.

Only one I can think of at the moment is Garbage, who've always had the same 4 official members.

And a Phil Cunningham replaced Gillian Gilbert in recent years (she and Stephen Morris have a very ill daughter so touring/recording are obviously not options for her) but yeah, their line-up was the same for 20-odd years (well they weren't really together for a good few of those years).

Scott McCaughey is the guitarist and i think he was offered to join REM years ago but turned it down as he didn't want to be tied down, he's been in loads of bands and still is. The Minus 5 are his current band.

The Doors don't make it for several reasons.

They released two albums in 1971-72 "Other Voices and Full Cirlce" and "An American Prayer" was released in 1978.

And also had other musician's play with with, the aforementioned Ian Astbury, Stuart Copeland form The Police. And they're current singer Brett Scallions, which is not a cool punk name BUT ACTUALLY HIS REAL NAME......:)
....thats like being called Dick Cheesey.

HHMMMMMMMMMMMMM....... What ya's think, do bands that refrom for live shows/reunions with differrent members count.

In which case Led Zep are out, for reunion gigs last year and the BRUUUUUUTAL Live Aid performance in 85, with none other than Phil fookin Collins behind the kit. But seriously.....youtube that performance, its very very very bad. Thats why they asked (demanded) that it not be included in the Live Aid box in 2005.

Craig Gannon was briefly in The Smiths, both recording and touring, so that rules them out.

    Pet Shop Boys.
    Beastie Boys?

    Beastie Boys?

Well spottted with the Smiths, didn't know that.

    But The Beasties are out!

Mix Master Mike replaced DJ Hurricane, maybe they mightn't be seen as members, but Kate Schellenbach was an original member, recorded with them too! She went on to join Luscious Jackson in 1991.

And least we forget those bands that operate a revolving door policy.
    The aforementioned Fall.
    Hawkwind.
    QOTSA.
And Fleetwood Mac. At one stage in Fleetwood Mac's career during one of their many disputes, their management decided to "hire" a COMPLETELY different band to do a whole tour which was supporting an album release. :)

Sorry Papa Smut, The Police are out too.
The Police recorded their first single, "Fall Out" and "Nothing Achieving" in 1977 with origianl guitarist Henry Padovani on guitar.

    The Beatles are out.

Ringo Starr left the band briefly during the recording of the white album.
McCartney played the drums on some tracks on the album. Nach bhfuil?

Now thats mad. It's like when I saw the pumpkins in Spain, where a friend says, "It's like watching half a cover band!"

Replaced d'Arcy with another female bassist and James Iha with another asian guitarist

Husker Du originally had a keyboardist. He was kicked out before any recordings though.

Pixies had a lineup change. Eric Drew Feldman played the keyboard very well on Trompe le Monde.

he was never a member of the band - he added keyboards to a few songs. virtually nobody would qualify for this question if you start including occasional session-musicians.

The Jam - they're currently touring without Paul Weller

similarly Talking Heads recorded an album as "The Heads" without David Byrne - talk about ridiculous

    Sugababes

They had the same line-up for....eh....5 minutes.

The band on tour at the moment are called "From The Jam", so its not really the Jam, just a kinda cover band.

    Orange Juice
    The Pale Fountains
    Whipping Boy
    Camper Van Beethoven
    The Housemartins
Galaxie 500 (one of the most underrated bands ever!)

Didn;t the housemartins have two drummers? The second of which joined the beautiful south with Paul Heaton

    Just Checked Wikipedia
The band was formed in 1983 by Paul Heaton (vocals), Stan Cullimore (guitar), Ted Key (bass) and Chris Lang (drums). The band's membership changed considerably over the years. Ted Key was replaced by Norman Cook — the future Fatboy Slim — and drummer Chris Lang was replaced by Hugh Whitaker, former drummer with The Gargoyles, who in turn was replaced with Dave Hemingway.

The band often referred to themselves as "the 4th best band in Hull", referring to Hull, the city in England where the band formed in 1983. (The three bands that were "better" were Red Guitars, Everything but the Girl, and The Gargoyles.)

Also MC5 recorded stuff without Michael Davis for the soundtrack of a film called Gold.

Rrright sorry - it's getting a tad pedantic though...someone walked into the studio and coughed on one of U2s albums therefore they don't count etc
