Sorry lads its probably been asked loads but I couldn't find it using search. But I am looking to use about 20 seconds of a song in a podcast that will most likely end up on iTunes. I am just wondering is it illegal to use the 20 seconds of it. I don't know why and I could be completly wrong but I thought you could get away with 10 seconds of a song. I am just wondering if I use the 20 seconds or so of the song will I be called for the copyright infringment?

    Cheers.

Contact the Irish Music Rights Organisation for info.

    info@imro.ie

They may be willing to grant you a limited licence FOC depending on whether or not you intend to use the clip for commercial gain.

It's not really the lenght of the clip that's significant, it breaches copyright if you take "substanially from" the work, you can do this by using only 10-20 seconds of a song if it's the most memorable part of it, or it's repeated throughout, or people automatically associate that clip with that song. You should definitely check with IMRO before using the clip.

Ah ok thanks. I will send them an email then. Its nonprofit anyway so hopefully they allow the limited license thing. Thank you.

Glad to have found this thread. I'm doing the same for a website only it's going to be about 100 clips, different authors.

    Gonna contact IMRO.

    Cheers
