TV Shows about your area.

I'm watching the third TV show in a week about the Gold Vault at Fort Knox. Don't know why, but all of a sudden there's a fad, it seems. Over-dramatic voice-overs talking about the place's secrecy and security, how it's the safest place in the world, how even taking photos can get you arrested.

Odd thing is, one can play golf about 200m from the building. It's just a rather small grey building off to the left as you drive from Louisville to Elizabethtown on the other side of the Depository from the golf course. I've not been arrested yet for photographing the place, even though it's clear they don't like visitors. Absolutely, the place is secure, but the TV's on about it as if it's the Last Resting Place of the Most Holy Grail. It's just a bank. Try to take photos of a North Korean military installation, then tell me about secrecy. Watching the show going all abreath about a place that's around the corner from me and I don't even think about is kindof surreal.

There's a similar disconnect between what I see on TV on LSA Anaconda, the huge US base in Iraq. They make it seem like living there is fraught with peril and the threat of imminent death at any second. Frankly, I was in greater injury of being beaten up for holding up the line at the base's Burger King.

Anyone ever find an accuracy match between a TV representation and some place you know from real life?

    NTM

George Gently, on BBC1, detective/crime series starring Martin Shaw was filmed on location in Ireland. A few scenes shot in Dun Laoghaire; funny to see the street you pass all the time on tv :)

Fair City has Dublin about right I reckon. It's like holding up a mirror to our society.

Actually most places only get mentioned on the telly because of bad news unfortunately (murder, drugs seizure, major jobs losses...) , except for the "happy" story about a kitten that got rescued from a tree that TV3 news always end with. Awwww

Mitchelstown is usually either for roadworks or cheese.

Our farm was on tv once in the 80's, I felt it was a fair reflection of my Dad's taste in gammy christmas jumpers.

My town was on the Prime Time ASBO special. They made a huge deal about people standing outside the local supermarket. It's actually quite a tame place, and I could think of worse places they could have featured.

Having said that, it was fun watching people complain about the scumbags even though some of their kids are amongst the scumbags!

They don't make shows abour Clondalkin, they can't even pronounce it properly.

    "Drugs seizure in ClonDaaaaawwwwwkin"
    "murder in Clondaaaaaaaaawwwwwwkin"

Palmerstown got on the news late last year when the found a whack of drugs somewhere, before that I think it would've been when a local lad was being deported and their was a bit of community activism against it from the local school.
