    Hi all,

Dont know if this should be here or fitness anyway...

Always wanted to play rugger so starting with a girls team in a month! Yay! :D

But my fitness it terrible at the minute used to be very fit but not anymore.
So what kinda level should i get myself up to? What kinda training should i start doing?

I want just enough fitness so when i start i wont be embarrassingly unfit! :o:p

    Spanks!

Hey Jemmy! That's awesome that you're starting rugby (You won't regret it!)

Your team will probably spend the first month or so working in fitness as well as working on basic drills etc. as the season I don't think starts 'til October. With women's rugby there are always newbies at the start of every season and teams tend to be great for introducing the skills etc. to them.

As for basic fitness if you can go for jogs, nothing massive but just to get your aerobic fitness up. As you get fitter if you could add some sprints into this too. One of the best things you could do, if possible, is circuit training.

Things like burpees, as well as squats and lunges (you don't even need weights for these at first) just to get your leg power up. Some press ups and for core stability if you do some sit ups and things like the plank. Just take it easy at first and build up, you don't want to burn out.

I personally am playing gaelic football and did a bit of tag rugby, I'm doing circuit training and where possible some light weights exercises.

Thanks Amz, looking forward to it. Horse riding took up alot of my time before showing every wknd and all that. But stopped that too for awhile, but starting back at that. It helps for the leg power as you put it!:P

circuit training (as AMZ said) would be a good idea as you will be using many diferent muscles playing rugby....some of them you didnt even know you had ;)

Good for you Jemmy !. Circuit training in July !!! pre-season is over a month away. ! Does some runs, before you hit straight into circuits. After say a week or two add in a short circuit and build it up slowly.

P.S woops just looked at Amz post in detail ! do what she says.

I wouldn't be going mad into the fitness at this time of year myself. Just keep things ticking over.

A lot of good advice here already. As Amz mentioned, the team will be doing fitness training and basic skills training for the first month anyway. But doing a bit of work on your own now would be a good idea as it will get your body used to working different muscles groups.

Firstly circuit training is hard to do on your own as you need to set up all the different exercises and keep an eye on the time as you are working. If I was in your position I would start off doing some short jogs, building it up when you feel you can. When your fitness improves a bit, and you feel capable of it, start doing short sprints. A good way to start off would be to get a few (say 5 markers.....the markers can be anything, old runners, sticks, whatever!) and lay them out in a line about 6 - 8 yards apart. Sprint to the first marker, then jog back to your starting point, then sprint to the seond marker, then jog back to your starting point, then sprint to your third marker and jog back to your starting point and so on until you are finished. When you get fitter you can increase the distances between the marker and/or change the jog back to the starting point to a sprint also.
A good idea while doing these is to have a rugby ball in your hands to help get used used to running with a ball in your hands!

It might be an idea to work on changing direction/side-stepping also, as when you are playing you will need to change direction with or without the ball. The best way to do this is to lay out your markers in a two straight lines a couple of yards apart. Have the lines jagged though.....so that in the line on the left the markers will be at say 5, 15, 25 and 35 yards, but the markers in the line on the right will be at say 10, 20, 30 and 40 yards. The purpose of this exercise is to run towards the first marker, just before you get to it, side step to the right which will put you in line with the marker on the right, when you get to that marker, side step to the left and so on. The best way to describe the side step is pushing off your left or right leg which will change your direction. http://ie.youtube.com/watch?v=COCVO0RPvUc In that video you can see the girl pushing off her right leg to make her side-step to the left.

Next off, i would do some upper body exercises as you will have a lot more phsyical contact on the upper body than you would have had before. I think starting off there are only 3 exercises that you should work on til you start training with the team. These would be press ups, sit ups and the plank. I'm sure i don't need to explain press ups and sits up ;):p. The reason why sit ups and the plank are important is that these exercises will strenghten your stomach muscles which will be taking hard hits when you get tackled. To do the plank, get into the press up position. Lower body supported by your toes as usual, but suppost your upper body with your elbows instead of your hands. You MUST keep your whole body (legs, ass and back) in a straight line parallel to the ground for this exercise to help you. Once you are in this position time yourself and see how long you can keep in it for. It is a very very hard exercise and if you have never done it before, you will be doing well to do it for 30 seconds! When you can't do it anymore, see how long you lasted and try beat that time the next time you do it.

I wouldn't really worry about doing any more exercises until you start training with the team. This is a good starting base though. It does look like a lot, but once you start doing it, you will fly through it!

Ah there was an incident a few years back where some nasty comments were made on a club message board about some members of my team. Wasn't very sporting and a bit childish.

The people who made the comments I would have most of an issue with, it's just unfortuante that the entire team will get tarred with the same brush.

Obviously yourself and gcgirl weren't around at the time so you're safe.

    I'm scared for her Bryn!

Division 1 Vs Development league is a very bad idea and benefits nobody! Seriously, whoever arranged that match needs their head examined.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,330 ✭✭✭✭Amz

Ah, a week's not so bad! Best to rest, you can always do some ball work, have a ball with you around the house watching telly etc. just to get used to having it in your hands and what not.

Glad to hear gcgirl is getting back into it though.
