Just there 5mins ago I turned off my PS3 as it froze while i was going to check a message. Then it came up on screen "an error occured during the rebuild operation. The hard disk must be formatted. All data on this hard disk will be deleted. Do you want to format? I clicked no and it didn't work. Anyone know is there anyway getting data back? Or what i can do? And has it happened to anyone else?

Mmm, ring customer support, they should be able to handle it. If they can't help you then I suppose you're Total Ringo.

I think it would be pretty much impossible to get a new 60Gb PS3 at this stage. Why don't you just format the hard drive? I know you'll lose your game saves etc. but that is inevitable at this stage. Same happened to me recently and I have no intention on starting FFX or Dragon Quest over again!

your pretty much up ****s creek..
notting you can do. there is no way you are going to get a new 60g now.

you guys should be backing up ur game saves weekly.

If your machine has packed it in you will receive a refurbished 60gb from Sony. Happened myself and it was like new, so you don't have to worry bout getting a 40gb instead.

Thats a shame, just finished DQVIII and it is great same with FF10. You should download a save file from a site if you have a max drive or sumfing

I never had a problem with a memory card, is this hard drive thing a regular occurance too?

Probably good to get a cheap 2.5 external, switch it out, do HD diagnostics on the PS3 drive on your PC, and hope your new bigger one works on your lovely 60GB.

    Possible win

When this happened to me I did do a couple of searches on the US Playstation forums. There were suggestions that you would be able to repair your hard drive without deleting all the data (would just fix corrupt sections). I'll post the thread (have it on my desktop) when I get home. Couldn't seem to get it to work for me though.

technically, you probably only need a new harddrive IF theres problems with the hd in it

i mean, if you take the hd out, format it on a pc, check for errors and run diagnostics on it, chances are everything will be gravy and itll work fine when you stick it back into the ps3

It won't be as simple as that though, will it?
