Advise on Dell Server

I need to get my hands on a server for a small office network. I just want the box, and I plan on installing Ubuntu (LAMP server) on it. At the moment I have a Dell PowerEdge T105 server in my basket ready for purchase.

    The server has
    • Dual Core AMD Opteron™ 1216, 2.4GHz, 2X1MB
    • 2GB, 667MHz, DDR2, 2x1GB Dual Ranked DIMMs
    • No RAID configuration, 1 or 2 SATA Hard Drives connected to onboard SATA controller
    • (HD1)80GB, SATA, 3.5-inch, 7.200 rpm Hard Drive
    • (HD2)80GB, SATA, 3.5-inch, 7.200 rpm Hard Drive
    • 16X DVD-ROM Drive with SATA Cable

all for €365.42 incl. VAT + Delivery (which I thought was a good deal).

They (Dell) are looking for €130 for a 500GB hard disk, so I plan on getting one of these from komplett, which is only €63 + delivery. I notice that the Dell server mentions SATA, while the Samsung from komplett is SATA2, will there be compatability problems would you imagine?. It is my intention to use one of the of 80GB drives as an OS/applications disk, and the 500GB for network storage. This leaves me with a 80GB spare I realise.

Also are any of you aware of any compatability problems with Linux (ubuntu) and the likes of the server above?

    Many thanks for your help.

It only has 1 ethernet port. Feck all use if you plan on connecting one to the internet, and one to the lan.

Well if I was to use RAID, then perhaps I'd go with 2 x 500GB disks from Komplett, and just take out the two 80GB SATA (no RAID controller) ones that come with the sever by default (cheapest HD option).

With regards having a second network interface, I don't fully understand why I would need one. I will connect this server up to a switch, which has a firewall between that and the Internet. I would like the server to be able to contact the internet for updates, but I don't want any connections from outside the LAN to the server.

Any advise regarding compatability or other?

Right.. seeing as you didn't give a description of what it was going to be used for, I assumed it was going to be used for website hosting / filestorage. (LAMP) and dishing internet access out the computers on the lan (firewall etc)

what exactly will it be used for and by how many people?

Yes I'm sorry I should have clarified this better initially.

The purpose of the server is to act as a fileshare for 5 people in the office. The storage space required for each person would most likely be less than 50GB. Secondly, I want to set it up as a LAMP server so I can host web based intranet applications, serving the 5 internal (Windows XP/Vista) clients. I am going with an Ubuntu server as I can't justify the need to purchase Windows Server licenses, and I have a moderate level of experience admin(ing) Linux servers anyway.

Ultimately my query is not what I'll be doing at the application layer, rather will there be any compatability issues associated with the Samsung hard disks on the Dell PowerEdge T105 and the installation ubuntu on that same Dell PowerEdge T105. I do understand however that the performance of the upper layers will depend on the hardware available.

    Any ideas?
