POP3 mail on iPhone . iPod touch

    I've been trying (unsuccessfully) to setup a POP3 mail account on my
    iPod touch. I imagine its an identical process on the iPhone.

    I'm using a 2.0 upgrade iPod touch. I am using the "Other" mail category
    to setup the e-mail account.
    My incoming server/outgoing server are mail2.eircom.net (the usual eircom
    broadband package one). It times out initially and gives me a chance to retry without using SSL authentication. That leads to a "Verifying POP account information" /New Account dialog at the top of the screen with spinning daisy icon which takes a long time to timeout.

    Has anyone successfully done this ?
    I've setup Gmail and Yahoo mail.
    I'm pretty certain its not a firewall issue with my network
