William Petersen will leave CSI: Crime Scene Investigation midway through next season, Entertainment Weekly reports.

Despite inking a deal to return to the police procedural drama earlier in the year, it has now emerged that Petersen's role in the ninth season will be greatly reduced.

Carol Mendelsohn, executive producer of the CBS show, disclosed that Petersen will remain involved in a production capacity and make occasional guest appearances.

"He will, whenever CBS asks, come back. I don't think you've seen the last of Gil Grissom," she said.

Petersen said of his new CSI role: "I'm in a great place in terms of knowing that I'll be more free to make choices. And I'm responsible enough to not do it in a way that would hurt [the show].

"I want it to work for the writers, I want it to work for the cast, and, most importantly, I want it to work for the audience. I don't want them to abandon the show."

With Petersen's departure, along with those of Jorja Fox and Gary Dourdan, Mendelsohn admitted that the ninth season would be "a year of transition for the show".

Can the original CSI survive without Grissom???????

AFAIK they don't show any repeats of the weekly episodes ... The only repeats are the one's when the series is over and they re-show the older episodes

gutted that Grissom wont be in it - its not the same without him. even the episodes where liev schnieder came in werent the same. they were good but nothing like when Griss is there.

i hate to say it but i dont know if ill stick it all through without grissom there. he is the show for me!

I can't believe Grissom and Warrick are going. CSI wont be the same, Grissom was the best in it. Nick and Warrick were great together aswell.

I suppose they will have him moving out to be with Jorja Fox and that will allow him to do guest appearences every now and again, I suppose if ratings start to dip they will bring him back to for a run of episodes.
Probably they will make Catherine Dept Head, but worrying times ahead.

CSI have lost Warrick, Sara and now the main lead character i cant see how it will do well with new cast members

Read that yesterday, that will be a loss but he seemed to be used less and less anyway. I couldn't wait to see the back of Sara and I don't really care about Warrick.

My question is what actors do they get to replace them and will their characters be interesting.

see...... pure class, CSI will be even better now
Fishburne now in talks to join CSI

'The Matrix' star Laurence Fishburne is in talks about succeeding William Petersen as the lead actor on 'CSI: Crime Scene Investigation'.
The Hollywood Reporter says that Fishburne's character would be a doctor/scientist who is an outsider and has the same genetic profile as a serial killer.
John Malkovich and Kurt Russell have also been linked to the lead role in the series

All 3 of those actors I'd be happy with, at least it should keep the show going as they would keep the core fans happy.

Laurence Fishburne is in talks to succeed William Petersen as the star of CBS' veteran crime drama CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

CBS's search has been shrouded in secrecy, but sources say Fishburne is being heavily courted to play the new character, described as a doctor/scientist outsider to the CSI unit who has the same genetic profile as a serial killer but hasn't previously acted on any homicidal impulses.

    Good Actor
