Yep, I really liked it too. Some reviews I read said it was a bit clichéd (and I have to agree, some of the characters are cookie cutter characters from every good war movie you've ever seen), but its compelling stuff.

Was gonna put up a thread in Television as I was suprised this wasn't mentioned yet.. but should have known to check here! :)

Excellent stuff.. really enjoyed it - a slow burner alright but very enjoyable stuff from start to finish.

    Plenty of humour (
the Hitler goose-step, the woodland camouflage in the desert, J-Lo
), characters are somewhat clichéd alright but we finally get to see a "warts-and-all" account of the situation in Iraq.

Also good to see Lee Tergesen back on TV (as he has been sorely missed since 'Oz').

Since this is adapted from a book, are the characters actually clichéd if they're modelled on real people?

Is life just one big cliché? I'd say the arm just attracts certain types which leads to lots of clichés

Just watched first episode. Slow to start but looking forward to future episodes. Looks like it might be another good one from HBO.

just about to post this, there is a thread in The Wire forum as this is made by the people behind it and HBO. Looks good so far, the first episode only aired the other day. tis a 7 episode mini-series with each episode around an hour long set in Iraq

    Jarhead - the series.

There are plenty of familar actors from past HBO productions in it. The first episode wasn't particularly engaging, hopefully it will improve.

Merged with thread in 'The Wire' forum.

    I'll get the popcorn.

Edit just saw what happened there. Not sure who I'm up for now

Just saw it there, pretty good I thought, has potential for when the sh*t hits the fan later on in the war. Does anyone know what period the book covers?

James Ransone plays the wise-cracking, loudmouthed joker (Josh), very similar to his previous incarnation as Ziggy from The Wire.

What's with the Skittles (product placement)?

How could you not place him! He was on the stand out lads in Season 2 of the Wire.

I think I've seen him in some other stuff but he'll always stand out in the Wire

I didn't either. Season 2 was years ago and I'm terrible with faces. I often know I recognise them but can often not say from where, even if it's from a show that I'm currently watching.... I mean in my defence their hair is often different...

He beefed up a fair bit too.

I thought it was ok. I am expecting more though.

I found it very hard to follow the dialogue and to catch people's names. Too many faces for me to remember but I knew that would happen anyway.

The first episode reminded me a lot of Jarhead (awful ****ing movie).
