Sony has just annouced movie downloads (both rental and to keep) for the PS3. Movie Studios are Sony, Fox, MGM, Lions Gate, Warner, Disney, Paramount, Turner, Funimation. Both SD and HD content and you can put them on you PSP aswell. Sounds better than the 360 Video Marketplace. No word yet if its gonna be available in Ireland.

Interface is quite nice. They just showed it at their E3 press conference. It is launching tonight. No word on Europe though.

the problem with the 360 marketplace is/was that microsoft don't have a movie studio, or a staple in movie distribution... so they wouldn't ever have the same clout with studios as sony does... as reflected in the line-up at launch.

hopefully tonight we get the service... i can see myself ditching my xtra-vision card

It's going live tonight so we will see then if iits availble in Ireland. You can also download movies through the Playstation Store on the PC.

I wouldn't ditch it just yet. HD rentals are $5.99 which would probably mean €5.99.

Well you might have to wait a few hours for the movie to download, depending on your BB speed so it mightn't be all that conveniant.

It is pretty poor so far.

Price cut for the PS3 80GB to $400, or the 40GB is getting a HDD upgrade, whatever way you want to look at it.

I thought that conference was the best out of the 3. If movie downloads are coming out tonight here in Ireland, I am seriously gonna consider gettiing rid of my 360.

well they said you can watch as you download. obviously BB speed is a critical part of that but i can stream (or "watch as you download") trailers from PSN.

as long as they keep with having good servers it should be fine. if it works i won't have to leave my house in the rain to drop back a movie i didn't like. it also allows you to watch trailers before checking the film out, instead of reading the back of the box to see quotes from FHM or Nuts...

    This is good to know.

I don't know if you are interested but I have a 360 as well and I downloaded the Matrix Reloaded HD about a month or so ago from Xbox Live. It took about 8-9 hours to download fully. It did have a feature in that you could start playing it before the download had finished but there's not much point doing that IMHO. If the download speed slows and you reach the point where you're waiting for the rest of the film to be downloaded so you can watch it, it would be frustrating. Also they had this restriction that once you press Play, you have 24 hours to watch the film before it expires.

I also noticed that my download seemed to be quite slow via wireless so in the end I just connected an ethernet cable directly to the router from the 360.

It would be nice to ditch the Xtravision card alright, but I can't seem them going out of business just yet seeing it takes a full day at least to download a HD film, versus the 10 minutes it takes to drive to the shop and rent it.

Anybody checked if Ireland has access to this service yet? I don't have a PS3 (yet) so I can't.

Just checked and as far as I know this is not yet available in Ireland/UK.

I dunno, I'd rather set my PS3 downloading for a few hours than have to queue up in Xtravision for 20 minutes while an angry customer at the counter argues with a student staff member over his identity. Only to be told that the precious final cover of the latest release does not relate to a physical disc in the vault because the previous angry customer demanded it without presenting the cover.

The movie you want, guaranteed on a Saturday night. That's something Xtravision can't do for me.

The movie downloads (high-def) from Microsoft are often quite low in quality, relatively speaking compared to a Blu-Ray movie.

Not really Microsoft's fault, they need to fit a hi-def movie into 4GB (less than half a DVD), when a Blu-Ray movie has 50GB to play with

Hopefully with the faster processor in the PS3 this will allow Sony to use a higher compression meaning the quality will be improved while the file size stays roughly the same.

Still takes blood ages to download though, stupid Ireland with its 3rd world internet service

So if,off the cuff, your mates or girlfriend wanna get a movie?

Xtra-Vision will still win in that case.

I believe xtravision is 2 for 2 nights for 8 or 8.50 anyway.

They will until we have proper high speed broadband in this country.

Of course if you don't have mates or a girlfriend it doesn't mater .... ahem ... *sob* ...

My friends buy pretty much all the films they want to see or just don't bother at all. My girlfriend would probably use bit torrent instead of a video store.

This really is the new frontier in the battle for your living room.

Three of the biggest tech companies in the world in Apple, Microsoft, Sony, as well as smaller players like Netflix, are all competing to offer you on-demand movies and TV shows. It's still very much in its infancy, but once the studios are on board, and the infastructure catches up, I can see this very much replacing the likes of Xtra-Vision etc.

I think Sony has the right approach in not offering HD purchases. A 4gb movie file may be HD in terms of resolution, but it can't compete in picture & sound quality with a 50gb blu-ray disc. If I want to own a movie in HD, I'll be picking it up on blu-ray, not as a digital download.

ps3fanboy have done a fairly thorough run-through of buying and renting off the PSN Video store.

Would this stuff go onto an external drive ,rather than the PS3 Drive ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,195 ✭✭✭✭noodler

I guess it would have too, I mean you could barely get 2 films then if they were HD and you wanted to buy them.

I worked in Xtra-Vision for 3 years and I can tell you that most of their profits comes from the admirable way they have branched out into Games Consoles, phones, call credit, music etc rather than rentals. Althought he rentals are best for them cos they are pure profit.

Furthermore alot of there stuff, while arguably cheaper than HMV etc, is still dearer than play.com etc online and when you dare mention this to people you get stuff like "oohh buying online, I wouldn't be in that kind of thing"
My point being, the large amount of people in this country still have a phobia of buying things online and I believe this won't be easily eradicated. Xtra-Vision et al will be okay for a while to come.

Once you take out the rental licence for the title, staff wages and bills/builiding lease... I can't imagine it's a great profit really. Xtravision have managed to stay at the cutting edge of physical media, the VHS-DVD changeover was pretty spot on and seamless. They'd handling HD now. Unfortunately it looks as if the redundancy of physical media is coming sooner rather than later. It's hard to see how they can possibly change to account for the the next big change without becoming an online service.

True enough. They'll see a dip in their profits though. Only reason I ever bought anything from Xtravision was because I got an employee discount. Otherwise it's too pricey. The technophobe brigade will be all they'll have left in 5 years time if they can't move with the times or diversify even further.

If you worked there too, then you know that the wages are pitiful, even for store managers, and many of the stores are too small for their stock because they refus eto expand. You probably saw, at some stage, a list of targets somewhere and maybe pencilled in figures of what that store achieved etc. I think theres still a decent profit there. In my store you are talking around 15K (on a standard week-without anything big being released or it being xmas or in a sale period) a week. In revenue. I won't pretend to know exactly how much is profit, but it was one of the smaller stores tbh.

I think the technophobia brigade is alot bigger than you give it credit for, I think we sometimes take for granted out computer knowledge etc because we are the so-called computer generation but theres ALOT fo people from 28 onwards who really just go down to xtra vision and buy a game on the spot, or a bunch of DVDs without any clue that they may be available cheaper elsewhere.

Yes, Consumer Ignorance. A big problem in Ireland. But your right, it has to get smaller with time with an even more tech savy generation on the way.

I agree about broadband and online shopping ,I'm working in a different house nearly everyday of the week and there are a lot of people who have computers but don't even turn them on.

Broadband isn't as big here either ,you'd probably need at least a 3MB line to get good use of online movies.

I think chorus is upgrading most of dublin ,wouldn't mind an old ten meg line myself sometime

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,534 ✭✭✭Dman001

I buy nearly everything online. I refuse to buy DVDs and games or CDs in shops in Ireland because they are much cheaper online. And with a 3V card, it is so simple to buy things.

Well I have an 'up to 8 MB' line that actually operates at 5-6MB most of the time and it's good for streaming movies from certain sites I can't name here but if those servers are busy then it can still be a pig to stream from. Hence, I think Sony will really need to have top notch facilities to prevent overload. For that reason I can see them limiting the release to the US in the first instance until they iron out all the problems.

But you don't have a big bill at the end of the month to pay with 3V. There is much more impulse buying when you have a credit card IMO.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,195 ✭✭✭✭noodler

If you have never had a credit card then how would you know? I only use mine for online, don't have to pay an extra 5 euros every time I use it, do not have to be restricted to buying in multiples of 5 and I do not get charged if I need to redeem what is left of my 3v voucher after i buy something for 41 euros when my voucher was for 45.

The 40e is the only downside and it is more than made up for by the convenience factor. (actually I think ten of that 40 is for ATM charges anyway).

You do have to pay interest though. I think it is better to pay upfront then having a big bill at the end of each month. Getting back to the original topic, the films are region locked so you can't set up an American account to download the movies.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,195 ✭✭✭✭noodler

But you only pay interest if you do not pay back what you owe at the end of each month. If you onyl use it for buying online (becos you have the cash in your account) then you never pay interest.

I used to work in their flagship store. Or it least it was the biggest at the time. The wages for store managers are terrible yep, but the organisation seems pretty top-heavy to me. Lots of district managers and head-office types. An army of over-paid David Brents, in my experience.

Big bills and interest only come if you eat into your credit and wait till bill time to pay. I just add funds to my CC before I buy with it so I never have to pay bills on it.
