My macbook has been on a permanent go-slow, gradually getting worse over the last week or so. I've repaired the disk permissions, but when I try to 'verify' the disk I get the following error message.

Does anyone know what this means for my macbook and will reinstalling the operating system fix it?

It's just over a year old and running 10.4.11

    Thanks :)

    Verifying volume “Macintosh HD”
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Checking multi-linked files.
    Checking Catalog hierarchy.
    %)
    Checking Extended Attributes file.
    Checking volume bitmap.
Volume Bit Map needs minor repair
    Checking volume information.
    Invalid volume free block count
    Invalid volume free block count
(It should be 14082215 instead of 14082214)",2)

The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.

Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit

    1 HFS volume checked
    Volume needs repair

Disk Utility can't repair the current start-up disk which is why the repair button is greyed out. So you'll need to boot from the Install dvd (hold c on start-up) and launch Disk Utility, click repair, etc.

    Thanks for the info.

Do you think that explains the permanent go-slow or might there be yet something else wrong with it?

It's possible. A lot of things can cause the system to slow down though. You might have a misbehaving background process or app. Open Activity Monitor and see if there's anything using up too much memory or cpu. I'd recommend installing iStat Pro, it's a widget and is pretty useful for keeping an eye on those things.

But repair the hd first and if you still have problems we can look into that.

smells like bad sectors on the disc to me, a prelude to disaster. Hope you've backed up

Start it up in 'single user mode' (apple & 'S' keys pressed on power up) and do a fsck ( FileSystem ChecK ). Instructions will be on the screen.

The best programme for repairing your problem is Diskwarrior. It's over 100 euro but will DEFINITELY sort this out as I have used it many times with the same error message that you have.
