My 27 year old car failed it's NCT as 'a bulb was blown'

    Test Readings

    Side-Slip/Alignment test PASS
    Suspension Test PASS
    Brake Test PASS
    Exhaust Emissions PASS
    Head Light Aim PASS

    Visual Defects
    'headlight condition-main beam-not working' FAIL/REFUSAL

Before leaving the house, checked indicators/brake lights/parking/dims & full with a friend & all OK!

Drove home 'F'ing annoyed, drove into garage as is dark & presto all lights & fulls working. So off in tomorrow morning to show my 'full beam' & get my cert.

Now I'm 'F'ing pi..ed off' can only presume the jerking/shaking/stopping unseated the bulb[?] and corrected itself on way home..:mad::mad:

What car do you have just as a matter of interest?

Check that the contacts in the bulb holder aren't partially corroded, and also that there are no loose wires or anything.

Bulb holder has slightest of movement all right, doesn't really matter anyhow it's a visual no charge, it's just frustating to get a clean sheet & as a result of testing get a loose bulb which is enough to produce a fail! & now is working..

Anyhow will drive in flash the lights collect my cert & be gone for another 2 years:)

That happened to me with a dipped beam bulb when my Fiat 850 was tested at 29 years old, bulb blew on the way to the centre. Headlamp focus couldn't be checked, except the tester told me he wasn't going to fail it on a bulb so he checked the other lamp twice and passed it:D

I've had that happen, also with a BMW - my E28.
Saw the fail sheet, went out with the inspector, twiddled the bulb and saved myself a trip back.
(The E28s are prone to letting moisture into the rear lights causing bad connections; regularly have to dry them out in wet weather.)

Alpina, if that's all you ever got failed on for an NCT you should be thankful!

Are you really gonna NCT a car in two yrs time aged 29? ;)

Must be a BMW thing as the same thing happened to me a couple of years ago with my E21. Was annoyed as the 2 headlights were practically new. Was totally peed off when I pulled into the driveway afterwards and all the lights were working perfectly again!

Cheers all, well went back in this evening, flashed my lights & got my cert, the guy that came out for the visual just shook his head & just said "ya we all took notice of her yesterday she's absolutely spotless, can't believe he didn't just give you the F'ing cert, he's only a grumpy auld b**lix anyhow" what a bloody joke, 27 yr old car in pristine condition at the mercy of "a grumpy auld b**lix"...

Dades, possibly will as nothing is even close to outside tolerences & at least would show up an issue, however I do dislike the 'shaking' up on the lift but then again shocks are all fine so...

The RS2000's final NCT is next month. I may get it done after that purely on a voluntary basis. it's good value for a fairly thorough checkover.
